Israeli hacker has leaked login credentials of thousands of registered
users!
An
Israeli hacker going by the handle of Zurael_sTz has hacked the official
website of Iranian Internet services provider Daba and leaked login
credentials of thousands of registered users online earlier today. Zurael_sTz who has been hacking Palestinian, Egyptian and Jordanian sites in recent past took his latest breach to Twitter and shared 3 files containing leaked data acquired from the Daba domain (Parsiva.daba.co.ir).

the hacker is claiming to leak 52,000 users’ credentials however upon
scanning the leaked files we didn’t find the claimed number of data but
it is possible that hacker may post the rest of the data in future. The
data breach exposed 342 email accounts, along with 2960 usernames with
detailed sensitive data such as hashed passwords, bank account numbers,
email addresses, telephone and mobile address. The leak also exposes the
administrator account including the username, password (MD5), email
address and name. Based on Hacked-DB analysis the user details are
indeed valid and are linked to the Parsiva.daba.co.ir website.
Daba, the hacked company also
provides dial-up, voice services, ADSL communication, Internet cards and
other services to users in Iran and hacking of such ISPs is always a
blow to the innocent users however Iranians are not new to such privacy
breaches. Just last month; an Internet bot exposed personal details of thousands of Telegram users in Iran, the data contained full names, phone numbers and personal address of registered Telegram users.
There’s
hardly ever someone from Israel combating the large-scale cyber attacks
from pro-Palestinian hackers. In 2012, an Israeli hacking group calling
itself IDF hacking team shut down stock exchange websites in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE)
as a revenge for hacking attack carried out by Nightmare hackers which
took down Israeli airline El Al’s, Tel Aviv stock exchange website

Beware of fake Prisma photo editing app on Android store targeting users with phishing and malware scam!
Prisma app for Android
users was launched about a week ago, since then it has become one of
the most used photo editing apps but with fame comes haters (just like
when hackers added (Fake Pokémon Go app on Android store containing RAT) and Prisma has caught the attentions of cyber criminals as IT security researchers at ESET have identified not one but several fake Prisma apps infecting users with different but dangerous trojan.
The
security team at Google Play store have since removed those apps but
the fact is that 1.5 million users have already downloaded those
infected apps.
ESET also noted
that most of the fake apps had no photo editing function rather they
infected users’ device with adware and malware. In some cases, some of
the infected Prisma apps tricked users into visiting survey sites
stealing their personal information and signing them up for bogus and
expensive SMS services. One Prisma app was discovered with a capability
of displaying fake messages on screen alerting users that their
smartphone has been infected with a virus which can be removed by
downloading an anti-virus. The anti-virus link provided in the warning
message was itself malicious.
The aforementioned app has been removed
from Google Store however based on the massive success of Prisma app,
users should expect more fake apps in the store. Remember, don’t
download third-party apps and always do a background check on developers

Just like it did in
2014, when Brazil hosted the Football World Cup, the Anonymous hacker
collective has launched threats and then delivered cyber-attacks against
Brazil government and sporting agencies for hosting the Rio Olympics in
spite of massive public protests against it.
The social issues surrounding the World Cup and the
Rio Olympics are well known by now, and we will not get into them, but
what you need to be aware of is that a large part of Brazilians did not
want their country to host the Olympics.
The reasons are that the events have drained the
nation's budget and have created harsh living and economic conditions
for people in the country, which is now facing a severe financial
crisis.
Anonymous made threats...
That being said, two days ago, two videos appeared
on YouTube, one in Portuguese and one in English, announcing upcoming
cyber-attacks against the Brazilian government and the organizers of the
Rio 2016 Olympics.
The group followed this by posting a list of targets
on Anonymous Brazil's Facebook page, asking fellow hackers to target
the listed websites, which included the Brazil 2016 portal, the
government portal for the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Sports
Ministry, the Brazilian Olympic Committee, and the official Rio 2016
Olympics page.
Threatening videos like these had been published
before by Anonymous, but not all of them were followed through with
actual hacking campaigns.

This time around, the threats were real, and after
the Rio 2016 Olympics had kicked off, the group started dumping
databases from several Brazilian sporting federations.
As you can see from the image below, the first batch
of dumped databases is from the Brazilian Handball Federation, the
Brazilian Boxing Federation, the Brazilian Triathlon Federation, and the
Brazilian Modern Pentathlon Federation.
First batch of Anonymous leaks
From the contents of the dumped data, these are the
databases of the official websites. No other data was included, such as
internal documents or sensitive government personnel information. These
four databases were dumped yesterday.
Today, the group has come back with a new batch of
data dumps, this time belonging to the government portal for the state
of Rio de Janeiro, and one from the Brazilian Paralympic Committee.
As with the first batch, only website databases were
included, no other information. The last database dumped, from the
Brazilian Paralympic Committee, only contained a table of site admins,
the database schema, and database connection details. It seems that the
group took special care not to dump any details that might affect
athletes with disabilities.
As the Olympic Games are just starting and will last for a few weeks, expect more hacks as part of this hacktivism campaign.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office arrested 13 people Aug. 8.

A days-long undercover operation in Volusia County resulted in the
arrests of 13 men who exchanged sexually explicit messages with — and
then traveled to meet – officers they believed were juveniles. Of those
13 suspects, two were from Ormond Beach.
An undercover officer
started chatting with David Jaco, 61, Aug. 4, who used the online alias
of "lookingdj." Even though the officer stated numerous times that he
was a 14-year-old boy, Jaco continued to make sexually explicit comments
to him, including: "What ever you want to learn."
The same day,
an undercover officered reached out to 19-year-old Jacob Smoot, who used
the name "Alex Taylor," and eventually started talking through texts.
Smoot was aware the person he was talking to was 14 years old, and made
comments such as: "Have you ever had sex," and "I'm asking because I
know some 14 year Olds and they've done everything with a boy."
The
Volusia County Sheriff's Office used social media sites, emails and
text messages to arrange sexual encounters with undercover agents posing
online as children 14 years old or younger. Some brought drugs, some
brought condoms – each expressed a clear desire to have sex with the boy
or girl he believed he was meeting.
“Our main goal is to protect
the children and let these people know: we are there, we will go after
them, and if they stick their heads up, we’re going to let the world
know who they are,” Sheriff Ben Johnson said in a news conference Aug. 8
announcing the arrests.
Undercover agents working out of the
Sheriff’s Office Operations Center in Daytona Beach, set up meetings
with the defendants at several public locations throughout Volusia
County, including Daytona Beach and Deltona. A mobile surveillance team
tracked the suspects as they arrived at those locations, where deputies
moved in to take them into custody.
Each defendant is charged with
attempted lewd or lascivious battery, using a computer to
seduce/solicit/lure/entice a child, traveling to meet a minor to engage
in unlawful sexual conduct and use of a two-way communication device to
commit a felony.

“These
people are predators,” Sheriff Johnson said. “They know how to talk to
children. They can take a good child and turn them bad, put them on the
wrong side. When you leave home to meet someone like that, you don’t
know what’s going to happen. You don’t know if they’re going to go
willingly… become a victim of sexual abuse, or worst-case scenario,
never come home. Parents have to get involved. They have to start
watching.”
The operation was a joint effort that enlisted the
cooperation of more than a dozen other Florida agencies. The Sheriff’s
Office, its Major Case Unit and Crime Scene Unit and the Volusia Bureau
of Investigation worked with the North Florida Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force, the ICE-Brevard-Volusia Child Exploitation Task
Force, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Attorney for the
Middle District of Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement,
the State Attorney’s Office for the Seventh Judicial Circuit, sheriff’s
offices from Brevard County, St. Johns County, Okaloosa County and
Jacksonville, and police departments from Daytona Beach, Gainesville,
Tallahassee and Pensacola.

Facebook is testing a WiFi service in rural India, allowing people with
no internet connection to buy affordable data packages from their local

Now, Facebook has partnered with state-owned carrier Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)
to expand its Express Wi-Fi program into a commercial launch, rolling
out 125 rural public WiFi hotspots soon in India, the Economic Times reported today.
"We are testing Express Wi-Fi program in India currently that allows
customers to purchase fast, reliable and affordable data packages from
their local ISP (Internet service providers) to access the Internet via
local hotspots," a Facebook spokesperson told ET.
If successful, Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi program has the potential to
provide the Internet to a huge user base – currently, 462 Million people
in India are using the Internet, but, with the lowest average
connection speed among other Asian countries.
Since just one-third of the whole population of the country has Internet
access, India is a key market for global giants like Google and
Facebook.
Both the companies are going out on a limb by bringing Internet connectivity in rural areas through flying drones, high-altitude balloons, and laser beams to ready the market for its next Billion users.
Last month, Facebook announced the creation of a new open-source wireless communication platform called OpenCellular, which is a doorbell-sized hardware device that can be easily deployed in remote locations by anyone.
Oracle has confirmed that its MICROS
division – which is one of the world's top three point-of-sale (POS)
services the company acquired in 2014 – has suffered a security breach.
Hackers had infected hundreds of computers at Oracle's point-of-sale
division, infiltrated the support portal used by customers, and
potentially accessed sales registers all over the world.
The software giant came to know about the data breach after its staff
discovered malicious code on the MICROS customer support portal and
certain legacy MICROS systems. Hackers likely installed malware on the
troubleshooting portal in order to capture customers' credentials as
they logged in.
These usernames and passwords can then be used to access their accounts
and remotely control their MICROS point-of-sales terminals.
In a brief letter sent to MICROS customers, Oracle told businesses to
change their MICROS account passwords for the MICROS online support site
– particularly passwords that are used by MICROS staff to control
on-site payment terminals remotely.
"Oracle Security has detected and addressed malicious code in certain
legacy MICROS systems," said the company. "Oracle's Corporate network
and other cloud and service offerings were not impacted by this code."
"Payment card data is encrypted both at rest and in transit in the
MICROS hosted environment… Consistent with standard security remediation
protocols, Oracle [requires] MICROS customers to change the passwords
for all MICROS accounts."
Citing unknown sources, security news site KrebsOnSecurity, reported that the attack possibly came from a Russian crime gang, dubbed Carbanak Gang, that has been accused of stealing more than $1 Billion from banks and retailer stores in past hacks.
The scope of the data breach is still unknown, but anonymous sources
familiar with the breach have told Krebs that the hack may have affected
up to 700 systems.
Since customers payment data is encrypted both at rest and in transit, Oracle said that this information is not at risk.
Oracle acquired MICROS in 2014 in a $5 Billion acquisition deal.
Currently, MICROS devices are deployed at over 330,000 point-of-sale
terminals (or cash registers) at food and beverage outlets, retail
stores, and hotels across 180 countries.
The software giant is still investigating the security breach at its payment terminal division.
Over the past few years, the security breach has hit POS terminals – or
"cash registers" – operated by a large number of retailers, food chains,
hotels, and other types of merchants. Two of the best-known victims to
be hit by POS malware are Target and Home Depot.
POS terminals have emerged as the favorite target for cybercriminal
gangs because when it comes to the cheap and easy way to siphon the vast
number of payment cards, breaching a single retailer's internal network

that the US intelligence has already detected a surge in the number of
cyber attacks against the organizations of the contenders. The Department of Homeland Security and
the FBI are issuing multiple warnings inviting politicians to assume a
proper security posture and avoid being hacked. “There is a long-standing practice
of briefing each of the candidates once they are officially designated,
and that shifts into a higher gear in terms of details after the
president-elect is known,” Clapper said. Clapper admitted that the US
intelligence gathered evidence of several hacking campaigns targeting
the campaigns of presidential contenders. The official highlighted the
different motivations of the attackers citing the risk of exposure to
cyber espionage campaigns operated by nation-state actors, to hacktivism, and financially motivated hackers. “We’re aware that campaigns and
related organizations and individuals are targeted by actors with a
variety of motivations — from philosophical differences to espionage,”
said the FBI spokesman Brian Hale. The official explained that government
experts detected several different kinds of attacks, ranging “from
defacements to intrusions.” According to US Intelligence, its experts
tracked intrusions by foreign intelligence services into the campaigns
for president back in 2008. According to Clapper, the two
candidates would receive “exactly the same” briefings that will be filed
to avoid any interference with the programs of the candidates. “We’ve been doing this for many years, it’s not designed to shape anybody’s worldview,” Clapper added.
Russian hackers target the Presidential Elections

CrowdStrike conducted a detailed analysis of a cyber attack suffered by
the Democratic National Committee (DNS). The experts from CrowdStrike discovered
not one, but two hacker groups that it considers “some of the best
adversaries out of the all the numerousnation-state” groups the company encounters daily, theCOZY BEARand theFANCY BEAR.
According to the Washington Post, the Russian hackers managed to steal
an entire database of opposition research on the presumptive Republican
nominee for PresidentDonald Trump. The breach of DNC servers is just one
of many in a long list of attacks against government and political
organization around the world. COZY BEAR and FANCY BEAR are no
newcomers to the cyber arena, these ATPs are considered among the most
dangerous persistent attackers and have been involved in numerous cyber
espionage campaigns in the past. In 2015, it was discovered that COZY
BEAR, a.k.a.CozyDuke, had been hidden in theUS State Department’s email serverfor
nearly a year having some officials close to the investigation,
claiming the breach was the “worst ever” cyber intrusion against a
federal agency. Thebreachforced
the State Department shut down much of its unclassified email system to
rid itself of the pervasive malware and made for an unfortunate
backdrop for the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, embroiled a
politically charged debate over her personal email server. In April 2015, experts at Kaspersky Lab
revealed the existence of the CozyDuke ATP that targeted several
high-profile organizations in the second half of 2014. Security experts
discovered many the similarities between the operations conducted by the
CozyDuke and other campaigns managed by the APT groups such as CosmicDuke, MiniDuke, and OnionDuke. “CozyDuke is definitely connected to these two campaigns, as well
as to the OnionDuke cyberespionage operation,” explained Baumgartner,
Principal Researcher at Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis
Team “Every one of these threat actors continues to track their targets,
and we believe their espionage tools are all created and managed by
Russian-speakers.” The experts at Kaspersky haven’t linked
the CozyDuke to the Russian Government, but media agencies and many
experts believe that theState DepartmentandWhite Houseattacks were carried out by Russian hackers working for the Kremlin, which could also be the government behind these APTs.

APT, another well-known espionage group, believed to be Russian.
According to the experts from PaloAlto Networks, spear phishing emails
with weaponized attachments were being sent by a possible compromised
server belonging to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an unidentified
country. PaloAlto experts noticed that FANCY BEAR hackers are using
source code from the infamous Carberp Trojan, a tactic they have already
used in the past. Once infected, the victim’s machine beacons to
“google.com” to mask beacons to a C2 server hosted at 191.101.31.6. The DNC hack doesn’t surprise the
experts, in the past other nation-state attackers hit politicians. In
2008, Chinese hackers compromised the computer networks of the Senators
Barrack Obama and John McCain and later, in 2012, the hackers targeted
the campaign networks of Obama as well as Mitt Romney. Trump is considered a politician
welcome to Russian authorities, Trump’s fascination with Russia is not a
mystery. Trump has made it no secret that he may be willing to
rehabilitate the Putin’s reputation on the world stage often saying, “Wouldn’t it be nice if actually we could get along with Russia.” at many of his rallies. Regardless of the political
implications and fallout of the DNC breach, there is little doubt that
Russian espionage actors most likely now have a comprehensive playbook
on the DNC’s strategy in defeating Trump in the November elections. How
they use that playbook remains to be seen and many other questions
about the breach remain unanswered. Both COZY BEAR and FANCY BEAR groups are well coordinated, funded, and highly skilled in their tradecraft. Were both groups acting alone, given
the same target by their handlers, or were they acting in a coordinated
effort on behalf of a single entity? The reply is not simple, but security
experts are aware that intelligence agencies rely on two or more hacker
groups that are given overlapping objectives without any knowledge of
each other. “This scenario is likely,
considering Russia’s complex and often adversarial intelligence
gathering operations as outlined in a recentpaper releasedby
the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) titled, “Putin’s
hydra: Inside Russia’s intelligence services.” The paper describes a
tangled web of bureaucrats, spies, law enforcement officers, and heads
of military intelligence units all vying to please the Kremlin. The
paper paints a grim picture of deceit, back stabbing, and one-upmanship
that has weakened the intelligence community’s ability to shape
geopolitical strategy and policies,” wrote the cyber security expert Rick Gamache.
DNC hackers’ attack was deeper than previously thought
In June, the experts from
CrowdStrike reported the security breach of the Democratic National
Committee (DNS), but new evidence collected by investigators suggests
DNC hackers accessed more information than previously thought. The hackers that breached a Democratic National Committeeconsultant’s
personal Yahoo Mail account likely accessed private communications in
the attempting to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump. Yahoo Newsconfirmedthe
story, reporting that the DNC consultant Alexandra Chalupa received a
notification warning from the Yahoo security experts that “strongly
suspect that your account has been the target of state-sponsored
actors.”

announced the security breach alleged caused by Russian state-sponsored
hackers more than 19,000 private DNC messages were leaked online by the
WikiLeaks organization. The publishing of the messages led to the
resignation of Chair Debra Wasserman Schultz. Investigators believe hackers not only
compromised DNC servers, the attacker likely compromised personal email
account and stolen data from DNC officials’ smartphones. “But Chalupa’s message, which had not been previously reported,
stands out: It is the first indication that the reach of the hackers who
penetrated the DNC has extended beyond the official email accounts of
committee officials to include their private email and potentially the
content on theirsmartphones,” reported Yahoo. “After
Chalupa sent the email to Miranda (which mentions that she had invited
this reporter to a meeting with Ukrainian journalists in Washington), it
triggered high-level concerns within the DNC, given the sensitive
nature of her work.” “That’s when we knew it was the Russians,” said
a Democratic Party source who has knowledge of the internal probe into
the hacked emails. To stem the damage, the source said, “we told her to stop her research.” “Two sources familiar with the breach said that the hackers’
reach was far more widespread than initially thought and includes
personal data about big party contributors and internal “vetting”
evaluations that include embarrassing comments about their business
dealings (as well as gossipy internal emails about the private affairs
of DNC staffers).” continues the post published by Yahoo. “There are
also signs that the hackers have penetrated the personal email of some
Clinton campaign staffers—at least those who were in communication with
senior DNC staff members.” How Wikileaks obtained the information from the alleged Russian hackers? Media outlets speculate that the WikiLeaks founderJulian Assangehas in the past hosted a talk show on RT, which is the Russian television network.
The Democratic Party organization continues to be under attack
Despite the news of the DNC, the hack
is in the headlines; hackers continue to target the Democratic Party
organization. Last week, experts discovered that the Democratic Party’s
congressional fundraising committee was hacked too. According to the Reuters, the FBI is investigating a security breach of the systems of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). “The FBI is investigating a cyber attack against another U.S.
Democratic Party group, which may be related to an earlier hack against
the Democratic National Committee, four people familiar with the matter
told Reuters.” states the Reuters. “The newly disclosed breach at the
DCCC may have been intended to gather information about donors, rather
than to steal money, the sources said on Thursday.” It is not clear what information has
been accessed by hackers; it is likely they accessed donors’
data including names, email addresses, and credit card details. Visitors to the DCCC website were
redirected to a bogus website mimicking the legitimate DCCC donation
page, the IP address of the website resembled one used by Russian
state-sponsored hackers allegedly involved in the breach of the DNC. “That was when a bogus website was registered with a name closely
resembling that of a main donation site connected to the DCCC. For some
time, internet traffic associated with donations that was supposed to
go to a company that processes campaign donations instead went to the
bogus site, two sources said” continues the Reuters.
Ethical Hacking Training – Resources (InfoSec)
Disinformation and rumors on the DNC hack
While experts investigated the case, other actors appeared on the scene, such as Guccifer 2.0 and Detox Ransome. Who are they? According to The Epoch Times, the notorious hacker Detox Ransome stole
Democrat Databases in 2015. In September 2015, the hacker breached one
of the services linked to the operations of the Democratic National
Committee. Detox Ransome accessed the database and
stole user credentials, email and other data belonging people involved
in the organizations connected to the Democratic National Committee
(DNC). The cyber security expert Edward Alexander provided to The Epoch Times evidence of the attack found on the dark web. “I know he was sitting on those databases, I know he had them,
and after he and I parted ways I’m sure he tried to monetize them
somehow,” Alexander said. Detox Ransome was in the headlines in
August 2015 when he hacked a server of the BitDefender security firm
that hosted the cloud-based management dashboards for its small and
medium-sized business clients. The hackers leaked a list of credentials
for more than 250 BitDefender accounts, as reported by the HackerFilm. He also threatened to leak more customer data unless the company paid $15,000. Alexander was introduced to Detox
Ransome by another notorious black hat hacker; Detox Ransome told him
over an online chat that he had hacked a website containing data
belonging “Obama and Hilary campaign people,” the archive is a trove
composed of “millions of emails.” Detox Ransome hacked the Rogue Global Solutions website that was operated by campaign staff of President Barack Obama “with
the desire to bring the technical innovations of the campaign to other
political, governmental, and international organizations.” Alexander tried to contact the Rogue
Global Solutions, but he discovered that the site is no longer operative
although the server containing the data was still online and open to
hackers. “We tried to alert Rogue Solutions, but that’s when we found out
they were no longer around and had folded up shop,” Alexander said. According to Alexander, Detox Ransome exploited the Heartbleed flaw to access the server that he found while he was scanning the web searching for vulnerable websites. “The system contained more than 1GB of data in its databases that
contained login credentials for key members of organizations and
services connected to the DNC.” reported The Epoch Times. “When Detox Ransome was exfiltrating data from the networks of Rogue Global Solutions, he used a screen shareprogram
to show Alexander what he had found. Alexander recorded the session for
evidence and had provided Epoch Times with the video.” The name of Detox Ransome isn’t the
unique one that was reported by the media in this period, a hacker using
the pseudonymous Guccifer 2.0, claimed responsibility for the
cyber-attack on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) too. Shortly after the CrowdStrike’s analysis was published online,
a hacker going by the persona Guccifer 2.0, claimed responsibility for
the DNC hack. Guccifer 2.0 is a play on a Romanian hacker calling
himselfGuccifer that hacked intoHillary Clinton’s personal email server, compromising thousands of sensitive US State Department documents, Guccifer 2.0 made his claims from his blog https://guccifer2.wordpress.com/2016/06/15/dnc/
; he explained to be a lone hacker that is not linked to Russian
Intelligence. The majority of security experts believes that Guccifer
2.0 is a character used for disinformation about the DNC hack. “Worldwide known cyber security
company CrowdStrike announced that the Democratic National Committee
(DNC) servers had been hacked by “sophisticated” hacker groups. I’m very pleased the company appreciated my skills so highly))) But in fact, it was easy, very easy. Guccifer may have been the first
one who penetrated Hillary Clinton’s and other Democrats’ mail servers.
But he certainly wasn’t the last. No wonder any other hacker could
easily get access to the DNC’s servers. Shame on CrowdStrike: Do you think
I’ve been in the DNC’s networks for almost a year and saved only two
documents? Do you really believe it? Here are just a few docs from many thousands I extracted when hacking into DNC’s network. They mentioned a leaked database on Donald Trump. Did they mean this one?” Guffifer 2.0 wrote on his blog As proof of the hack, the Guccifer 2.0
released several sensitive DNC documents including donor lists, strategy
lists, and even a document titled “NATIONAL SECURITY TRANSITION
PLANNING” detailing a timeline of activities of transitioning Secretary
Hilary Clinton into the role of President after the November election.

Conclusion
The events raised the debate about the effective value of attribution and its accuracy. There is no doubt that the DNC hack is
likely going to be one of many cyber attacks in the coming months as we
approach the elections later this year in November. Whoever is behind the attack, the DNC
hack demonstrates the potential influence of hackers on the politic of
one of the most important governments of the world. Once again, an attack from the immaterial cyberspace could have a severe impact on the event in the real world. Back to the specific case, probably a good security posture of politicians could reduce their attack surface.
The arrested members also include the founder Fang Xiaodun, according to Chinese news agency Caixinwang. With about 5,000 members, WooYun is regarded as China’s biggest white hat community.
According to media reports, the members of WooYun were arrested by the law enforcement authorities without any prior notice.

happened very abruptly, even members within Wooyun were kept in the
dark. People from Wooyun said there was no administrative procedures nor
prior notice for the arrest.”

WooYun website is suspended indefinitely
Xiaodun
hasn’t shared any updates on his WeChat account since July 18. His
website is also suspended indefinitely and it remains deactivated. It’s
being said that WooYun has taken down the website as a precaution.
Website’s
demise took place before Xiaodun’s arrest. The members of WooYun
community said that Xiaodun didn’t express anything regarding pressure
by the government. Xiaodun was also scheduled to deliver a talk, which
has also been cancelled, at a conference in early August.
As
nothing is certain at the moment, people are speculating that WooYun got
into trouble for publicising the flaws in some websites.

The FBI spent years dismantling the core group of hacktivists responsible
for the formation of the original group, incarcerating much of the
primary brain trust which made Anonymous (Anon) a serious threat to
government and corporate actors. However, Anonymous’ branded use of the
Guy Fawkes mask, as popularized by the movie ‘V’ for Vendetta,
helped them to achieve international household recognition. The brand is
now synonymous with civil disobedience and electronic resistance, and
in this loosely bound way, the organization lives on.
The beauty of Anon has always been its adaptive application of leaderless resistance
to a technology driven world, however, there appears to be an attempted
coup taking place, and Anonymous as a headless social justice movement
is being hi-jacked by a group of unknowns claiming this brand as theirs
to promote a privately funded political party with a highly suspicious
platform advocating for a one world government.

World, Meet ‘THumP®’

co-opting of the Anonymous brand was recently introduced to the world
in a 40 minute, professionally staged video announcing the public launch
of The Humanity Party (THumP®).

March of 2015, various Anons discreetly met via the Internet and Skype
to vote on a Board of Directors to lead the movement. The Board
appointed one of its Anons as its Voice of Anonymous™.” – THumP®

it’s only gonna be this one voice of this one character who decides to
put on a costume that looks almost like he’s in the KKK. And he has some
sort of Masonic symbols on it, he’s got these creepy clown gloves and
some sort of Abba wig on, and so suddenly he’s gonna be the voice of

The
video presentation features a messianic Guy-Fawkes-mask-wearing,
leader-type figure, dressed in white leather emblazoned with a Freemason
logo modified to present the letters ‘A’ an ‘V.” The use of secret society symbolism,
such as the Freemason logo is ubiquitous in modern media, representing,
in actuality, the very organizations and forces that Anonymous had
always been resisting.
During
the introduction to the video, the viewer is nonchalantly instructed to
only pay attention to this voice, to accept it as the authorized,
official Voice of Anonymous™, and to ignore any others.
The THumP® Plan – Make Everything Great Again
Who runs THumP®?
According to the website, it will be managed by, “The collective will of people who give their voice and support to what THumP® is trying to accomplish.”
And, what exactly is THumP® trying to accomplish?
In a press release dated June, 20th, hosted by 24-7pressrelease.com, reporting from Salt Lake City, Utah, the following wasposted for public consideration:
“Establish and promote the possibility of a ONE World Government
and a new Constitution that guarantees and provides worldwide basic
human rights to ALL people of Earth. These inalienable human rights
include the Five Basic Necessities of Life (“FBNL”): free healthy food
and water, secure and safe housing, basic clothing, health and mental
care, and education.
Introduce a plan to unify capitalistic and socialistic agendas and ideologies to provide the FBNL free of charge.
Promote
peace and unity through education and common sense disclosures, thereby
providing unprecedented evidence that the world’s major religions have
been, are, and will continue to be the cause of the world’s social ills.
Unparalleled
and unique, The Humanity Party does not accept donations of any kind.
The movement relies on individual Anons throughout the world to use
individual peaceful and legal means through social and Internet media to
spread its message.” [Source]
As
stated here and in the PR video, their primary goals are to abolish
borders and national sovereignty, ban religion, to establish a global
government that will protect the environment, protect animal rights and
human individuality, while providing for everyone, the FBNL. To accomplish this, the US Constitution will be modified.

is only one nation that is fully structured and endowed with the
infrastructure, government, world influence, technology, means, and
military might needed to step forward and save this world: the United
States of America.” – THumP®
Other key tenets of their platform, include: the need for individuality and diversity, the
end of nationalism and national sovereignty, the abandonment of
tradition, ideology, patriotism and prejudices, and the demonization of
math, science and intellectualism. All of which are presented as opponents of human intelligence.
If we are all united behind this platform, why will state violence and ‘military might’ be necessary to enforce it?
As
justification of the policies proposed, the video spends considerable
time positioning the world’s incredible problems as the result of
adults, while extolling the virtues of the minds of ‘little children,’
who, according to THumP®, have had their intelligence replaced with knowledge by grown ups:
“We were forced to accept the adult way. Their way. Regardless of how we felt about it. To
impress the adults and be accepted by them, we learned their ways.
Accepted their Gods. and Applied their values to ourself. We learned
their science…” – THumP®
The message
is directed at the younger demographic of today’s activists,
capitalizing on their justifiable anger at the establishment, and
dumbing down complex issues to meet an overtly neo-liberal agenda. The
video also comes off as anti-family, eerily reminiscent of the
disturbing picture painted by George Orwell in 1984 of an all-powerful government who destroys the family by turning children into agent’s and tools of state ideology.
Repackaging the New World Order
These
aims are suspiciously similar to the long-standing goals of world elite
and powerful families who control the breadth of international banking
and global industry. This is the ‘1%’ that Anonymous has combated in the
past, and it includes the people, groups and institutions oft-referred
to as the Illuminati, or the New World Order (NWO).
For a more complete understanding of the NWO’s platform, see Dr. John Coleman’s 1983 breakdown, 21 Goals of the Illuminati and The Committee of 300. Dr. Coleman’s comprehensive, research-based list includes the following tenets:
To establish a One World Government.
To bring about the utter destruction of all national identity and national pride.

THumP® is
propositioning young people to adopt the endgame of the elite, while
posing as the resistance. This kind of psychological operation has been
seen before, most notably in the production of the Koni 2012 pre campaign which aimed to engineer public support for military interventionism in Africa.
The
Humanity Party also fails to acknowledge taxation as theft, calling
instead for a fair tax, then blames global inequality not on a corrupt
oligarchy, but on the masses of people who support governments around
the world by voting. Making a statement of defense for the 1%, THumP® says:

humanity party does not support attack or reforms that punish the
wealthy for doing what all people on earth wish they could do,
have financial security for themselves or their dependents… Because of
the desire of the 99% to also become wealthy the people of earth are
justifying supporting current governments that are set up and
established to cater more to the needs of the 1% than to the needs of
the majority. This is the fault of the people who elect and support their governments.” –THumP®
As
declared, the party does not accept donations, yet they are funded
well-enough to produce studio quality staged video, professional
press-releases, websites and videos. This would indicate that is
privately funded, meaning that funds are coming from people who can
afford to invest in propaganda, the 1%. A phone number on their site is
from an area code in Pennsylvania.
Resistance is Futile, Said Anonymous, Never
The THumP® campaign
may be interpreted as, “Resistance is futile. So if you can’t beat ’em,
join ’em.” The future of Anonymous as a resistance organization is in
question.
“Anonymous doesn’t even exist anymore. All
the actual hackers behind it have been arrested. It has since been
pseudonym government agencies use to disclose their enemies’ personal
information without it looking like obvious government involvement. All
recent anonymous attacks have not been on oppressive governments but

From the massive release of private celebrity photos (which the
internet dubbed “The Fappening”) to the North Korean Sony attacks, 2014
was a year of notable “hacking” activity. Events like these have created
a call to action for increased security measures across the board,
especially as data protection continues to become a national interest. But
who are the people behind this activity? How old are they? What do they
look like? Often times these individuals are portrayed as shadowy
figures hiding behind the cloak of an obscure username (as that is the
only information known about them)… but every now and again… one of
these “black hats” is caught or comes forward. This gives the public a
snapshot of the demographics comprising the hacker community. We
wanted to take things even further, so we made a composite image of 50
notorious hackers. This portrait would be data security’s worst
nightmare.
The Face Of CyberCrime
Several
of the individuals that comprise the above image are affiliated with
the group “Anonymous,” which is a loosely associated international
network of “hacktivists.” Anonymous has no real command structure and is
largely a collective of ideas. Nonetheless, it has been associated with
several DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks on high profile
government, corporate, and religious targets. Their unofficial mascot is
the image of Guy Fawkes (seen in the header graphic).
A major
component of Anonymous would be the smaller groups that comprise it.
These groups are much more directed in their thoughts, ideology, and
actions, which also makes them much more “dangerous.”
One such
group would be an organization called LulzSec, which was comprised of
seven core members and several high profile associates. LulzSec was
responsible for successful attacks on Fox, Sony, and even the CIA, and
an unsuccessful attack on the media streaming giant Netflix.
After
their leader, Hector Mansegur (also known as “Sabu”), was caught by
authorities, Mansegur gave up information which led to the capture of
the other core members. Using their pictures, we were able to construct a
composite image of LulzSec

After
researching these different hacking groups, we came to realize there
were very few women mentioned. There had to be some notable female
hackers in this underground community, and after some searching, we
weren’t disappointed.
While men still dominate the hacking
culture, women are definitely starting to get gain more notoriety within
the tech world, and this crosses over into the various hacker
communities. We found several high profile, code breaking women and made
a composite image of them as well.
The Face Of Female CyberCrime
Overall,
this project provided some intriguing insights into hacker
demographics. In addition, it finally assigned a face to all those chaos
causing usernames.

authorities have arbitrarily detained dozens of people linked to the
ongoing, largely peaceful, protests and beaten many of them, Human
Rights Watch said today. The authorities also have pressed unjustified
criminal charges against numerous protest leaders and some participants
and denied them basic rights of detainees.
“The Armenian authorities’ response to Yerevan’s largely peaceful protests has been excessive and cruel,” said Jane Buchanan,
associate Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The
tense atmosphere at some protests is no justification for detaining
people arbitrarily, beating them, and bringing disproportionate criminal
charges against them.”
There have been protests in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, almost every
night since July 17, 2016, after a group of armed men from a radical
opposition group seized a Yerevan police station, killing one policeman
and taking several hostages. Before the gunmen surrendered on July 31,
public support for them and disaffection with the government grew into a
wide protest movement in Yerevan.
The protests have been largely peaceful, with isolated incidents of
violence by some protesters. Police in some cases responded to protests
with excessive force and with large-scale arbitrary detentions. Human
Rights Watch interviewed victims of arbitrary detention and police
beatings, witnesses to the detentions and abuse, and lawyers for many of
those detained.
Police beat many detainees, in some cases severely, and in some
cases did not allow them to get prompt medical care for their injuries.
For example, on July 18, police detained a 26-year-old activist,
Andranik Aslanyan, at Yerevan’s Liberty Square and severely beat him and
two other men in the back of a police van. Police kicked, punched, and
beat Aslanyan on the head, face, back, and legs, spat on him, and rubbed
his face on their boots to humiliate him. He was then held for three
hours before being taken to a hospital even though he, and others, asked
for and needed immediate medical attention.
Armenia’s Special Investigative Service has opened investigations
into the police behavior, and these investigations should be swift,
thorough, and lead to accountability for police who engaged in unlawful
conduct, Human Rights Watch said. The Special Investigative Service told
Human Rights Watch on August 3, that it has also opened investigations
into the police actions on July 29, as well as into the police behavior
on other protest nights, and that investigators have not yet identified
any suspects or made any arrests among law enforcement agencies.
Police have detained hundreds of people since July 17, but law
enforcement authorities have not publicly disclosed exactly how many
people were detained, where they were held, how many have been released,
or how many are under arrest and facing criminal charges. The Armenian
Ombudsman’s Office told Human Rights Watch that authorities detained at
least 220 people from July 17 through 30, and brought criminal charges
against approximately 45 of them.
Police can detain protesters who commit acts of violence or violate
public order laws. But detention is considered arbitrary if it does not
comply with the legal framework for detention and is not based on the
person’s specific behavior but instead is a response to the person’s
legitimate exercise of rights or freedoms guaranteed under international
law.
In some cases, police held detainees for up to 12 hours without
documenting the detentions. Under Armenian law, police have three hours
to prepare a detention record or release the detainee. In at least two
cases, police held groups of people – in one case more than 100 people –
for longer periods in a gymnasium on a base belonging to interior
troops.
The authorities released many detainees without charge. Of the
approximately 45 in pretrial detention, many face criminal charges for
allegedly “organizing mass disorder,” which carries a penalty of up to
10 years in prison. In some cases, authorities have brought, or
threatened to bring, charges against political activists for illegal
weapons possession. In two of the cases, detainees claim that police
planted the weapons on them.
Authorities denied many detainees their basic rights, including
prompt access to a lawyer of their choosing and the opportunity to
inform a relative of their detention and whereabouts. In some cases,
people searched desperately for their relatives before finding out they
had been detained. Among the vocal protest leaders facing charges of
organizing mass disorder are Andreas Ghukasyan, an opposition
politician, and Hovsep Khurshudyan, David Sanasaryan, and Armen
Martirosyan, all senior members of the opposition Heritage Party. The
men’s lawyers told Human Rights Watch that the primary basis for the
charges in all cases is police testimony. Witnesses and the men’s
lawyers told Human Rights Watch that the police beat Ghukasyan and
Sanasaryan in detention and denied them basic medical care.
On August 1 and 2, courts ordered the four leaders be held for two
months in pretrial detention, ruling that each is a flight risk and
would hinder the investigation or commit another crime if freed on bail.
The men’s lawyers said that investigators did not provide the court
specific facts to support the need for custody, but simply stated all
possible legal grounds for denial. Without explanation, the judges
rejected all defense motions to release the men, referring only to the
gravity of the crime and envisaged sanction for it.
In determining whether to authorize a person’s detention, human
rights law requires the judicial authorities, at a minimum, have enough
evidence to establish a reasonable suspicion that the person committed
an offense. To justify pretrial detention, the European Court of Human
Rights, whose rulings are binding on Armenia, has repeatedly clarified
that a court needs evidence of specific facts and personal circumstances
relevant to the accused justifying pretrial detention, and cannot rely
on “general and abstract” reasons for detention.
“The authorities have presented no meaningful grounds for holding
these four protest leaders,” Buchanan said. “They should be released
immediately on bail, pending the outcome of the investigation and a fair
trial.”
The authorities have also denied the men the opportunity to make
phone calls and to have family visits, claiming that contact with family
members or others could compromise the investigation. Under Armenian
law, detainees have the right to one phone call per week and one family
visit every two weeks.
Under Armenian law, the crime of “organizing mass disorder” requires
that the disorder be “accompanied with violence, pogroms, arson,
destruction or damage to property, using fire-arms, explosives or
explosive devices, or by armed resistance to the representative of the
authorities.” Charging leaders and participants of the July 29 protests
with this crime is unjustified and disproportionate, given that,
although at times tense, the demonstration was largely nonviolent, Human
Rights Watch said. Such over-charging, when the facts on the ground do
not support them, appears intended to intimidate protesters and deter
them from exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly
to demonstrate against the government, rather than any genuine effort to
uphold law and order.
The majority of those in pretrial custody are at the Nubarashen
pretrial detention facility, which has a significant overcrowding
problem. An independent expert with a monitoring group that, under the
auspices of Armenia’s Justice Ministry, observes conditions in
facilities for detainees and prisoners, told Human Rights Watch that the
facility’s capacity is 840 inmates, but in January, it held 942
detainees. Excessive use of pretrial detention following the recent
protests and dozens of new detainees may exacerbate overcrowding. One
lawyer reported that his client, detained on July 20 in relation to the
protests, is held in a cell with 14 inmates sleeping in shifts because
there are only 12 beds.
Armenia is a party to multiple human rights treaties, including the
European Convention on Human Rights and the Convention against Torture
and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, that
require it to ensure effective investigations and appropriate
prosecutions and punishment of officials responsible for serious
violations of human rights, including ill-treatment.
“The authorities’ detention of protest leaders and denial of basic
detainee rights are unjustifiably punitive and seemed designed to send a
message to others that public expression of discontent can carry
tremendous risks,” Buchanan said. For detailed accounts, please see below.
Human Rights Watch conducted interviews in Yerevan from July 30 to
August 4, with 12 victims of police beatings and arbitrary detention
from July 17 to July 30. Human Rights Watch also interviewed eight
lawyers for people facing criminal charges in relation to the July
protests. Some of those facing charges were also victims of police
violence. Human Rights Watch also interviewed one lawyer for two people
who were released without charge and relatives of two men charged with
crimes related to the protests. Beatings, Delays in Medical Care Andranik Aslanyan
Police detained Andranik Aslanyan, the 26-year-old activist, on July 18
at Yerevan’s Liberty Square, severely beat him in a police van, then
took him to a gym at interior troops base no. 1033, Aslanyan said:
Four policemen grabbed me, twisted my arms
behind my back and stuffed me into a police van together with two other
men. When they closed the doors, they started to beat us, kicking,
punching, and beating me on my head, feet, face, and back. They
handcuffed me so tightly that it cut into the flesh. I was thrown to the
floor of the van, face down, and they continued to beat me. They spit
on us to humiliate us even further. Then one of the policemen pushed his
boot under my face, kicked me several times and then grabbed my head
and pinned it to his boots, trying to put my lips on them.… I told them
that they’ll be held accountable for this, and every time I said this,
they’d beat me even more.… I had bruises all over my back and face,
swelling, and a large lump on the back of my head. Every part of my body
was in pain.
Police took Aslanyan, along with David Sanasaryan and a third
activist, both of whom had also been beaten, to the troop base. At the
base’s gym, policemen lined them up, facing the wall, searched them, and
confiscated their cell phones before taking their handcuffs off. One
policeman told Aslanyan to sign a document saying that he disobeyed the
legal order of a policeman. Aslanyan refused.
Despite Aslanyan’s repeated requests for medical assistance, police
called an ambulance only three hours later. Both Aslanyan and Sanasaryan
were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The following day, the Special Investigative Service interviewed
Aslanyan regarding his treatment. An investigator also sent him for a
forensic medical exam. Several days later, Aslanyan received a letter
from the Special Investigative Service that it had opened a criminal
investigation, but without any details. David Sanasaryan
Aslanyan said that although his face was pressed to the van’s floor, he
was aware that the police were also kicking and hitting Sanasaryan, who
was also in the van. Aslanyan said: “When we got to the military unit,
policemen dragged David out, dropped him on the ground, and continued to
beat him. Four or five policemen kicked and punched him, so that at
some point David lost consciousness.”
Ara Petrossyan, another protester, was also held at the interior
troop base on July 18. He spoke with Sanasaryan and tried to help him.
Petrossyan saw police bring Sanasaryan, his hands handcuffed behind his
back, into the gym and throw him to the floor, and saw him lose
consciousness. Petrossyan said:
We wanted to help, but they [police]
wouldn’t let us. The police did nothing. As he lay on the floor for
about 5 to 10 minutes, police checked his pulse a few times. David
regained consciousness, but could hardly speak. He asked for water; he
said he was nauseated. We feared he had a concussion. The police said
maybe he just ate something bad. The doctor from the base checked his
blood pressure and pulse and claimed that David was fine. David lay down
on the floor, with his bag under his head. After three hours an
ambulance took David to the hospital.
Arsen Tadevosyan
Police beat Arsen Tadevosyan, a 30-year-old activist, on July 21,
fracturing his jaw. Tadevosyan went to Khorenatsi Street, the location
of the besieged police station, at about 10 p.m. on July 20, shortly
after skirmishes between police and some protesters. He told Human
Rights Watch that together with other activists he was trying to calm
the crowd, to avoid further clashes. Shortly after 3 a.m., activists
noticed a growing number of police in the area. Tadevosyan said that
around the same time another group of protesters arrived, apparently
drunk, and that they behaved aggressively, cursing both police and
protesters. Police did nothing to isolate them, but instead deemed the
entire protest illegal and used a loudspeaker to tell the crowd to
disperse within 15 minutes. Police made another announcement five
minutes later, then quickly moved in. Two policemen grabbed Tadevosyan,
twisted his arms, and took him behind the police cordon and assaulted
him, he said. Police took him to Yerevan’s Shengavit police station
around 4 a.m. It was only at around 10 a.m. that an ambulance took him
to a hospital. He said:
Four policemen started to beat me. They
were hitting me on my head and punching me in the face, breaking my jaw
in two places. They were hitting nonstop. After my jaw was broken, I put
my hand on my face, saying, “Don’t hit me on my head, please, don’t.”
But they continued to beat me even more. At some point I lost
consciousness, and came back to my senses after searing pain from
another blow. They were punching and kicking all over my body, my ribs,
back, everywhere.
When they were done beating they wanted to
put me in a police car. I was holding my jaw and I was bleeding. There
was no space in first two police cars that drove by, as they were full
with other detainees. Police continued to beat me until they found a
space in the third car and drove me away with three other detainees.
I thought that the beating part was over,
but as we arrived at a police station, police created a sort of a
corridor from the car to the station, about 5 to 6 meters long and they
continued to kick and punch as we were taken from the car to the
station. The beating continued inside too, as they lined us all up along
the wall, searched us, took our phones and punched us few times.
I was telling everyone that my jaw was
broken, my face was swollen and bleeding. I was in so much pain; I was
screaming from pain. Policemen were telling me that I was exaggerating,
although it was very visible that my jaw was broken, my whole face was
swollen.
Tadevosyan was told to sign several documents, which he did not read.
“I was in so much pain, that I was just signing anything they [police]
were giving me, in the hope that they would call an ambulance,” he said.
Doctors at the hospital treated Tadevosyan for multiple fractures to
the left side of his jaw and near the chin, as well as a concussion.
At about 2 or 3 p.m., Tadevosyan was released from the hospital and
went back to the Shengavit police station to retrieve his cell phone.
After he waited several hours, an investigator arrested Tadevosyan on
suspicion of participating in mass disorder and ordered his transfer to a
temporary detention facility. Tadevosyan continued to have severe pain
and requested medical assistance again, but police refused to call an
ambulance.
After Tadevosyan arrived at the temporary detention center, an
official called an ambulance, which transferred him to a local hospital.
After he spent a day in the hospital, the authorities transferred
Tadevosyan to a prison hospital at Erebuni, where police guarded his
medical ward. On July 23, Tadevosyan was released without charge.
Human Rights Watch documented numerous due process violations in
Tadevosyan’s case. Police did not allow him to call his family until his
second day of detention. Tadevosyan was detained and designated a
suspect without having a chance to retain a lawyer of his choosing. He
was also compelled to sign documents that he did not understand.
An investigator from the Special Investigating Service, the agency
in charge of investigating crimes by law enforcement officers,
questioned Tadevosyan several days later and on August 1, granted him
victim status in an investigation. Andreas Ghukasyan
Police detained Andreas Ghukasyan, an opposition politician, late on
the night of July 29, his lawyer, Yervand Varusyan, told Human Rights
Watch. During the arrest, the police knocked Ghukasyan down and beat him
extensively with truncheons on his body and legs. The lawyer said he
saw Ghukasyan’s bruises when he visited him in detention on July 30. The
lawyer said that Ghukasyan has constant pain in his knees and other
areas, and needs help walking. He made four requests to the investigator
to be taken to the hospital for an X-ray, but received no response and
no explanation until August 1, when authorities allowed him to be taken
to a hospital for an X-ray and examination. Armen Oganesyan
Human Rights Watch spoke with the lawyer representing Armen Oganesyan, a
protester detained on July 29, when police violently dispersed
protesters. Oganesyan helped a journalist, Robert Ananyan of A1+
information agency, bandage his fragmentation wound from the stun
grenades police used to disperse the protesters. When a local resident
offered to drive the journalist away from the scene, Oganesyan also got
into the car. Police stopped the car after a few hundred meters, took
the driver and Oganesyan out, and started beating them.
Police punched and kicked Oganesyan and struck him with clubs,
causing multiple bruises to his left ear and leg, and a lump on the back
of his head. One policeman tried to choke him, almost causing him to
lose consciousness. Human Rights Watch independently corroborated the
circumstances of Oganesyan’s detention in an interview with Ananyan.
Police took Oganesyan to Nor-Nork police station, where he was
arrested on suspicion of participating in mass disorder and taken to a
temporary detention site in Erebuni. Oganesyan did not have access to a
lawyer of his choosing until 4 p.m. the next day, on July 30. He was
released on August 1, for lack of evidence to support the charges.
Human Rights Watch also documented separately how police beat journalists and protesters during the dispersal of the July 29 demonstration. Arbitrary Detention and Denial of Due Process
Authorities routinely denied detainees the opportunity to inform a
relative or loved one about their detention and have prompt access to a
lawyer of their choosing, fundamental rights of detainees and important
safeguards to prevent ill-treatment and guarantee an effective defense.
In many instances, police also violated the requirement under Armenian
law to prepare a detention report within three hours or release the
detainee.
On at least two occasions, on July 18 and July 28, police
arbitrarily detained people at bases in Yerevan belonging to the
interior troops. Police denied entry to lawyers, did not allow those
detained to inform their relatives of their whereabouts, and denied them
food, detainees said. Some people reported beatings on the way to the
bases.
Police also held detainees in police stations in and around Yerevan.
In some cases, unidentified men in civilian clothes, driving civilian
cars, detained people and took them to police stations.
On July 18, the authorities held over 100 people for at least 12
hours in a gymnasium at interior troop base no. 1033. Among them was a
political activist, Albert Bagdasaryan, 56. Police had detained
Bagdasaryan during a gathering of people on July 17 on Korenatsi Street,
near the captured police station. Bagdasaryan said:
Two or three policemen grabbed me, pushed
my head down, and stuffed me into a car. They were rude. They didn’t
introduce themselves. They sped to the base. There were at least 10 guys
with automatic weapons in a line guarding us. They didn’t say anything
to us; they didn’t explain anything.
There were women and young women too among
detainees. They gave us water but didn’t give us any food.… At one point
one policeman started swearing aggressively at us detainees. We got
agitated and wanted to retaliate. But a more senior officer intervened
and stopped the swearing.
Petrossyan, detained at a protest on Liberty Square in the evening of July 18, described detention at the same base:
There was a protest, I went with my
friends. The goal was to be peaceful. I saw how some policemen very
rudely dragged David Sanasaryan to a police car. We ran and tried to
help him. …I tried to grab David from behind, but police surrounded me
and put me into a small police car with four other people.
They took us to a base [of the interior
troops], not to a police station. There were guys there with masks,
automatic weapons, truncheons. They made us stand facing the wall with
our hands up.… After maybe 40 minutes they gave us some water and
allowed us to smoke. Then they let us sit down. I was released after two
hours.
A lawyer for three other men detained at the interior ministry troop base no. 1033 confirmed this description of events:
Police again detained Petrossyan at around
midnight on July 30, about a kilometer from the besieged police station,
where police had, about an hour before, violently dispersed protesters.
There was about 30 of us. We hadn’t participated in [the main protest].
Three or four police cars drove up. We started to run. They screamed
“stop” and ran after us. They detained us really aggressively. They hit
me on the head, and put my brother into a car with real force. It was a
small car, and they stuffed a lot of us in the back, so we could hardly
sit. They didn’t explain where they were taking us. They swore at us in
the car and told us to shut up.
They took us to the yard of some building, I
don’t know where. There were a lot of police. A policeman there took my
phone and I haven’t gotten it back. They pulled us out of the car and
stuffed us into a different police car. They took us to a police station
in Malatia [district]. They held me there for 12 hours or so, letting
us go at about noon. My brother was held in a police station in another
town, in Echmiadzin. They let him go about the same time. One guy
[detained when we were], and in a different car, got beaten on the way. A
policeman kicked him with his knee and broke a rib.
The whole time I was there, I couldn’t make
any calls. They had my phone. Some guys asked to call, and the police
said, “No, no way!” They threatened us and told us not to go to more
demonstrations, saying, “If you get caught again, it will be very bad
for you.”
Detention of Yeghishe Petrosyan
A lawyer for Yeghishe Petrosyan, a well-known composer and musician,
told Human Rights Watch that police detained Petrosyan and dozens of
others on July 28, at a protest on Khorenatsi Street. Police put the
detainees on buses and took them to interior troop base no. 1032 in
Davitashen district. The lawyer, who had spoken with Petrosyan, said
that police kept the detainees for 10 hours, with armed police guarding
them. Police provided no food and insufficient water and denied lawyers’
access to the detainees. Police released the detainees later that night
and in the early morning hours of July 29. Soso Markaryan
Soso Markaryan, 23, participated in a protest on the evening of July 20
on Khorenatsi Street. At around 10 p.m., some protesters clashed with
police. Markaryan’s lawyer said that later in the evening police fired
stun grenades into the crowd to disperse it, and one exploded near
Markaryan, injuring him in the legs. As he fled, he threw rocks at
police who were attempting to detain some protesters. Markaryan went
home, where he treated his wounds himself. The next morning, on July 21,
police detained Markaryan at his workplace and took him to a police
station.
The authorities did not give Markaryan the opportunity to inform his
family of his detention or request a lawyer of his choosing. Instead,
they assigned him a public defender, claiming that they needed urgently
to conduct numerous procedural steps and did not have time to wait for
his preferred lawyer to arrive. Markaryan’s relatives had a lot of
difficulty determining his whereabouts, learning his location only on
July 22.
On July 23, a Saturday, Ara Zakharyan, the lawyer Markyan’s family
hired to represent him, asked the authorities to let him meet with
Markaryan. However, an investigator claimed it was not possible to visit
Markaryan in the temporary detention facility on Saturday or Sunday. On
Monday, July 25, the investigator claimed to be too busy. Under
Armenian law, the investigator must be present to confirm the choice of a
defense lawyer with the detainee.
Zakharyan met with Markaryan for the first time only at noon on July
26, more than five days after he was detained. A court had already
ordered Markaryan be held for two months in pretrial detention. He faces
charges of organizing mass disorder. “Karen”
Karen, whose name was changed for security considerations, was detained
on July 29, just before the police violently dispersed protesters in
the Sari Tagh neighborhood. His lawyer said that at around 10 p.m.,
several policemen dragged Karen behind the police cordon, roughed him
up, put him into a police car and took him to Nor-Nork district police
station. Karen managed to call his wife and tell her about his detention
before police confiscated his cell phone. Law enforcement officials
designated him a suspect in mass disorder, and transferred him to the
Erebuni temporary detention facility. Karen spent three nights in
official custody. Despite his lawyer’s persistent efforts, she was
denied an access to her client for the entire period.
The lawyer was outside the temporary detention facility on July 30
and 31, after being asked by Karen’s wife to represent him. The lawyer
repeatedly called investigators, requesting access to her client, which
required an investigator’s presence at their initial meeting.
Investigators first said that no investigators were available to go to
the temporary detention facility for the meeting. Then investigators
stopped responding to her calls. The lawyer found out later that the
investigator had compelled Karen to agree to accept a
government-appointed lawyer. Karen’s wife was allowed to visit him only a
few hours before his release, on August 1. Alleged Planting of Evidence to Bring Weapons Charges Armen Mikaelyan
Authorities detained Armen Mikaelyan after a protest at approximately
2:30 a.m. on July 27. He alleges that they planted a weapon on him when
they detained him. Mikaelyan is a member of Sasna Tser, the informal
group whose members violently took over the Erebuni police station on
July 17. Mikaelyan did not participate in the takeover. His wife told
Human Rights Watch that as she, Mikaelyan, his parents, and sister left
the protest near the police station, two civilian cars with tinted
windows and without license plates pulled up next to the family. Eight
men in civilian clothes who did not identify themselves grabbed
Mikaelyan, forced him into one of the cars, and drove him to a police
station on the outskirts of Yerevan. Other men forcibly held Mikaelyan’s
wife and father, apparently to prevent them from interfering.
Mikaelyan’s lawyer, who met with him in detention later in the
morning of July 27, said Mikaelyan told him that police planted a gun on
him while he was handcuffed in the police car. Mikaelyan’s wife told
Human Rights Watch that at the protest Mikaelyan was wearing a summer
shirt and loose-fitting jeans, which would have made it very difficult
for him to hide a gun on his person. Mikaelyan was charged with carrying
an illegal weapon and sent for two months in Nubarashen pretrial
detention center. Albert Bagdasaryan
Albert Bagdasaryan, the political activist detained on July 18, was
again detained on July 29, after meeting with other political activists

Email Hack Leads to Threats Against Journalists in Ukraine
Journalists Covering the Conflict in Eastern Ukraine Targeted
Journalists in Ukraine, especially those covering the armed
conflict in the east, often put their safety on the line to get their
stories out. But in recent months their job became even riskier, and not
because of bullets and mortar fire. They are increasingly a target for
Ukrainian nationalist groups that enjoy the explicit support of some
government officials.
Last week, unknown hackers leaked an archive of emails belonging to
an official of the rebel-held self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic
(DPR). The archive contained personal information of foreign and local
reporters and human rights monitors: copies of passports, reporters’
accreditations, email addresses, and correspondence between journalists
and DPR officials. Now anyone who’s interested can find online copies of
passport scans belonging to journalists and human rights defenders.
Some reporters told Human Rights Watch that they started receiving
threats via social media immediately after the leak. This isn’t
surprising. In May 2014, Kiev designated the two self-proclaimed
republics in eastern Ukraine – the DPR and Luhansk People’s Republic –
as terrorist organizations. Some Ukrainian officials see any contact
with them as harmful to Ukraine, even an act of treason. This leaves
Ukrainian journalists particularly vulnerable.
This is not the first time hackers exposed and attempted to tarnish
reporters working in eastern Ukraine. In May 2016, a pro-government
website, Myrotvorets, leaked hacked documents, containing names, email
addresses, and phone numbers of journalists accredited by the DPR. Some
journalists reported receiving threats following the publication of the documents. Although Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko, publically condemned Myrotvorets’ actions, the Interior Minister Arsen Avakov supported them. The authorities launched an investigation into the Myrotvorets website, but so far it hasn’t produced any results.
This time, no senior politician or official has clearly condemned
the hackers’ actions, putting the exposed reporters and activists at
further risk.
The recent leak is an affront to important work being done by
reporters and human rights defenders in Ukraine, and especially in the
war-torn Donbas region, where they risk their lives to do their job.
It is reprehensible that some government officials and nationalist
groups conflate getting access to rebel-controlled areas with supporting
the rebels. Such irresponsible comments and actions jeopardize the
safety of journalists and human rights defenders and violate their right
to privacy. Critical reporting is a healthy sign in a democracy, and
Ukrainian authorities should protect journalists, not demonize them.

An Australian Mountain biker has suffered third degree burns, after his iPhone exploded during a minor fall from his bicycle, on July 31st, 2016.
36-year-old Gareth Clear was reportedly biking alone in the city of
Sydney, around the Manly Dam area in the Northern Beaches, when his foot
missed the pedal of the bicycle. This made him to fall off his bike,
landing accidentally on his iPhone. The phone was in his back pocket
when he fell.
Moments later, after he got up from the ground, he noticed smoke
pouring from his back. He then began to feel what he described as a
searing sensation on the right side of his buttocks.
When Clear checked to see what was wrong, he realized the shorts he
was wearing were melting. Becoming shocked at what he was seeing, he
decided to save the situation. However, that was when the worst
happened. The iPhone exploded.
With nobody around to help Clear, he struggled to remove the shorts.
But it was too late. It had melted, burning deep into his skin. “I suddenly saw this incredible plume of smoke. And there was a
searing pain that went along with it, as though someone had pushed a
huge block of ice against my leg. It was pretty freaking painful,” Clear narrated his ordeal.
As Clear tried desperately to remove the melting pants and the
exploded phone, he reportedly burned his fingers. The phone had stuck
deep into his skin. He had to use his fist to punch the phone off his
burning skin.
The phone dislodged with a huge metallic bang before falling on the ground, where smoke continued to pour out. Clear said: “The
phone was stuck to my leg having melted through both my shorts and my
Skins. It had to have been more than 100 degrees. I was on my own,
writhing on the ground in agony.”
Clear said he wanted to leave the phone on the ground and seek
medical treatment, but he had a second thought that the phone could
cause harm to somebody else. He then waited for the phone to cool,
before picking it up. “I basically sat there for about 20 minutes because I wanted to
take the phone with me. I used two bits of wood to pick the phone up,
and by the time I walked back to Manly with the phone and my bike, so
probably another 30 minutes, it had finally cooled down,” he explained.
When he finally got to Manly, his burns were so bad that people
assisted him to get to the Royal North Shore hospital. There, he was
referred to the burns unit of the hospital for a skin graft.
Clear spent six days attached to a machine, which sits inside the
graft. The machine vacuumed out the dead, charred skin, encouraging new
healthy skin to grow.
Clear revealed that his major concern, when the incident happened,
was that the lithium from the exploded phone might have tainted his
blood. But doctors later told him that the substance had not gotten to
his blood.
He said: “I thought I’d been poisoned. When I got to hospital
though, that was the least of my concerns. They told me I’d lost three
layers of skin. I said ‘oh. Okay. Guess we’d better do something about
that then.”
According to Clear, he will continue to ride his bicycle, but will
never carry an iPhone with him. He advised people to be careful how they
carry their iPhones because it is a disaster waiting to happen. He
admitted the accident has been an eye opener for him.
He was quoted as saying: “It’s a tragedy waiting to happen. A
mini bomb. Every iPhone is the same, if it happens to one, it will
happen to another one. I was just lucky I was wearing pretty thick
clothing and it was on my lower body. It could hurt someone else much
more than it did me.”
The Daily Mail
reports that Apple, the iPhone manufacturer, has contacted Mr Clear to
tell him that they are looking into the issue. However, the company has
refused to answer further questions from the media on the incident.

microburst which occurs when a cooled column of air sinks rapidly

My Gaza hospital was destroyed. Why has the world stayed silent?

(Published in the National) Two years ago, my hospital was destroyed.
It was the only dedicated rehabilitation hospital in Gaza, a modern
centre of care with 80 beds, a therapeutic garden and state-of-the-art
equipment. Our patients are among Gaza's most vulnerable residents; many are paralysed, some need round-the-clock care. In summer 2014, Gaza endured 51 days of attacks by Israel in which no place was safe, not even schools or hospitals.
Soon after the attacks began, El Wafa, situated near the Shujaiyya
neighbourhood in eastern Gaza, came under fire from Israeli shells and
missiles. On July 17, the hospital was struck, leading to a power cut and fires on several floors. We evacuated the patients under constant shelling and in the dark. After several more days of strikes, on July 23, the hospital was completely destroyed in an Israeli air raid. In the attack, we not only lost a critical lifeline for our patients, but also an investment of 30 years. About $15 million (Dh55.1m) worth of equipment, gone in seconds. Since then, we have set up a temporary care centre in a site we share with a geriatric hospital. Though our capacity is reduced, we continue to do everything we can to care for our patients. One of our patients, Mohammed, 11, was injured during the war.
He was paralysed completely when a bomb hit a family gathering, killing
nine of his close relatives and severing his mother's legs. Mohammed needs 24-hour observation, and so must stay in the hospital, but nevertheless continues to thrive. We registered him in school, and he has passed his fourth grade exams and is now moving to the fifth grade. Teachers come to El Wafa to give him lessons in maths, science, Arabic, English and religion. Mohammed's recovery from the trauma of the attacks will be slow.
A lack of international support, and Israel's restrictions on the entry
of building materials, mean that Gaza's recovery has also been slow. In total, 17 hospitals and 56 health centres were damaged or destroyed, and more than 11,000 homes were lost. Two years on, El Wafa is still in ruins, and only 10 per cent of destroyed homes have been rebuilt. El Wafa shares the struggles of all people in Gaza. We struggle to replace what was lost, we struggle to rebuild and we struggle for justice. Most of all, we struggle for freedom. The blockadeaffects all aspects of medical care in Gaza. Medicines and equipment are difficult to procure.
Even when we are able to source modern equipment through partnerships
with international organisations, we often lack the training to use it
effectively.
This is because the blockade not only restricts the flow of goods and
materials, it also restricts our most basic right to movement. Patients struggle to get permits to travel outside for specialist treatment. Even when we have the right equipment inside Gaza, the blockade still holds us back from providing effective, modern care. We often cannot bring expert trainers in, or get our clinicians out to train in the latest medical techniques. This holds back the potential of Gaza's dedicated medical professionals.
In El Wafa's current temporary site, we have an oxygen therapy machine
worth millions of dollars but it sits gathering dust as we are unable to
train technicians to operate it. With our hospital still in ruins, what hope is there for the future? Though we hope to rebuild, we cannot do so in the same place for fear of being attacked again. This is the third time that they targeted the hospital; we do not want to risk a fourth time. Human life is too precious. Our only hope is to rebuild on a new site, but even this cannot guarantee our safety in Gaza. The prospect of new attacks hangs over us. When a hospital is destroyed and nobody is held accountable, there is no deterrent to it happening again. Justice is vital not only for the well-being of the victims but to prevent this from happening again. Israel claims that El Wafa was used as a staging point for militants attacking their soldiers. But accountability is impossible when the accused is also the judge.
Only an independent, international investigation can get to the truth
of why our hospital was destroyed and provide justice for our patients
and staff. Israel has strongly opposed this, even going so far as to bar UN investigators from accessing Gaza. Until there is accountability, there will be no safe space in Gaza.
