Anonymous Report: Was Arizona’s Voter Registration Data Hacked and Changed?
Posted on .Ely Diaz made the trip from Los Angeles to Phoenix the last two weekends before the Arizona Democratic Primary to volunteer for Bernie Sanders. When Ely arrived to headquarters on Sunday morning, March 20 about 8:45 a.m., volunteers were being told they could no longer use the electronic get out the vote (GOTV) app they’d been using on their phones to help with door to door canvassing. Paper print outs were to be used exclusively instead. Campaign workers were tight-lipped about the reason for the switch. Ely made inquiries until another volunteer whispered that “apparently Bernie’s list has been hacked.” This was not a surprise to Ely, every campaign worker has war stories of cheating by the other side, but Ely was later gobsmacked to realize “the magnitude or the repercussions [those] actions could have on the Arizona primary.”
Ely did not speak to the Justice Gazette for their similar story and provided Anonymous with pictures from time volunteering with the Bernie Brigade. The Bernie Brigade traveled by bus and carpool from Los Angeles to Arizona to work or volunteer with the campaign. Anonymous has made contact with a top official with the Sanders campaign who was active in Arizona for comment. We will update this report accordingly if and when we hear back.
Two days after Sanders’ Arizona campaign barred further use of their GOTV phone app, Bianca Rodriguez was forced to vote provisionally even though she brought along a copy of her state-issued voter registration card proving she was a registered Democrat. Bianca, whose last name we have changed at her request, provided Anonymous with a copy of her voter registration card, along with a screen shot with the identical voter identification number showing that her information had been scrubbed from Arizona’s Secretary of State voting website.
The day before the election, Bianca’s information was still there. She used it to look up her proper polling location. Bianca pursued her case with the Pinal County Recorder until she was assured that her vote had been counted; others were not so fortunate. Some people, like twenty-one year old Ron Traider*, were simply told they could not vote, even with a provisional ballot, because their information had similarly disappeared from Arizona’s Secretary of State website or had been switched to a different party or none altogether. Arizona officials have stated that most provisional ballots will not be counted because the voting information they have on record does not indicate that the voters in question are registered with the party whose candidate they attempted to vote into the general election in November.
Individual Reports
Concerned that we might only be hearing one side of the story, Anonymous has used our very best online research methods in an attempt to discover what the reach of this potentially rather substantial scandal may be. We searched deeply on multiple social media sites, using a wide variety of search terms. We looked into every news story we could reasonably find reporting on this phenomenon. We engaged directly with a few Republicans and Hillary Clinton supporters on Twitter. We tried various general Google searches. We were looking very closely at specific reports where individuals said either that they or someone they knew directly (a relative, friend, or person they were at the polls with) had experienced having their voter registration changed without their knowledge. Where we were able to have direct contact with Democrats making such claims, we asked whether they supported Sanders or Clinton. While these results are far from comprehensive (there are likely well over a thousand of these little reports out there), we have done our best to get an accurate sampling. As reported on Twitter, these are our results:
Update: in going through the details of the database, the numbers adjusted slightly. 1 Unknown Party, 12 GOP, 139 Dem, 113 Sanders supporters, 24 Unknown Preference, 2 Clinton.
Anonymous has published our full database below. There are associated weblinks in the database for 146 of the 151 entries. The other five, like Bianca’s, were emailed to us directly. Eighty-five of the reports came from a private, get out the vote Facebook Event for Sanders in Arizona. We need to fill out the details of those 85 reports, but do not want to let that work hold up publication. That event page has thousands of members. For transparency, and in advance of a possible story, we shared the data in advance with a reporter from the Washington Post and made sure they had access to the Private Event page. The reports from that Facebook Event were almost all made while voting was still happening and before results had been announced. Five of the specific reports of this happening to Republican voters came from that Facebook Event. Dozens of people, in addition to Ron, nearly all Sanders supporters, were prevented from voting altogether.
Three reports include video, the most powerful of which is Alisa Wolfe’s on Facebook. Alisa pursued her inability to vote on election day until the county recorder electronically found two different signed records, one of which Alisa insisted she did not sign, noting the clear difference in signatures. The recorder acknowledged a mistake had been made and said her vote would be allowed. Another video includes a man showing his voter ID card on camera; it has been viewed over 120,000 times as of publication here.
We did not discover a Clinton supporter at all until entry 140. Entry 151 was emailed to us from Maeve Robertson, a seventy-year-old Clinton supporter form Tuscon. Maeve explained that she “didn’t receive my early and ballot and could not not vote because my registration had mysteriously changed to independent. I didn’t receive my voter registration card until the day after the primary.” Maeve has since followed up with the Pima County Recorder who told her that, even though she had been registered as a Democrat for decades and has had an Arizona drivers license since she was sixteen, new procedures meant that she was required to state that she was a Democrat when she renewed her license this past December. She had never had to do that previously and was accordingly disenfranchised from voting last Tuesday. The Recorder told Ms. Robertson that the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) clerk should have asked her to designate a party. “That didn’t happen, or I certainly would have. Seems as though there’s been some sabotage at the MVD.” While Ms. Robertson would have voted for Clinton and may have donated a small amount to her campaign, she closed cheerfully with the following: “This election it’s vote for anyone who is not Trump, not Cruz or any of those loony tunes Republicans. Thanks for doing this. I’m a big fan of Anonymous.”
Hacked? Arizona’s SQL Vulnerability
Anonymous asked three of our veteran hackers, of varying skill levels, to scan Arizona’s Secretary of State website for vulnerabilities, while insisting that nothing illegal be done along the way. One hacker had health related issues that prevented her or him from doing a vulnerability scan. Another hacker was quite busy, but made two or three attempts. In each case, the IP associated with their vulnerability scan was immediately blocked by the website. One of Anonymous’ best hackers, however, discovered a massive vulnerability in less than a minute that we feel is nearly impossible to defend against a skilled and determined attacker.Arizona’s Secretary of State website stores its data in SQL databases. Properly maintained (a big question given Arizona’s constant penny wise, pound foolish budgeting), SQL databases can be defended against hackers with a moderate or lesser skill level. But SQL databases in general have been known to have a particular, structural flaw for decades. SQL Injection, where random data is entered into a data entry field, can trigger an SQL database to give up most or all of its goods to an unauthorized user. SQL Injection is nearly always the first line of attack a hacker learns, and at its most basic level, it can literally be taught to a toddler . A Vice article from November is entitled “The History of SQL Injection, the Hack That Will Never Go Away.” It notes that SQL Injection repeatedly takes the number one spot in Open Web Application Security Project Foundation’s triennial report on threats that websites face.
NoSQL or non-SQL databases have been around since the 1960’s, gained popularity beginning in 1998 in the initial move to greater web security, and are used by banks, major social media sites, and web giants like Google and Amazon to process and protect big data.
Anonymous may release an addendum to this report at a later time outlining specific SQL related vulnerabilities for the Arizona Secretary of State’s voter related websites.
Impact
How widespread was the problem of switched voter registrations last Tuesday?It is hard to say with certainty.
At this point, it is clear that some of the cases, like Ms. Robertson’s, stem from ridiculous new procedures put in place by Arizona’s Secretary of State and Motor Vehicles Division. That said, other cases like Bianca’s, clearly do not fit that pattern, and the apparent overwhelming impact on Sanders supporters cannot be explained by a glitch that should have hit all parties and candidate supporters in roughly equal numbers.
The numbers in Pima County and Maricopa are particularly glaring. Reports of five-inch thick piles of provisional ballots and up to 2/3 of ballots in a particular voting location in Pima are quite suspicious. Numbers Anonymous is using internally to monitor election results across the country suggest that Sanders should have won student rich, and reliably progressive Pima county comfortably. The lack of polling stations alone in Maricopa County cannot explain how Phoenix, with a Democratic Mayor, could see Republicans show up at the polls on election day to the tune of around 80,000 voters, while Democrats cast a paltry 33,000 votes in Maricopa County on election day.
While Early Voting is increasing in Arizona with each election, we are rather skeptical of the idea that Maricopa had nearly 100,000 fewer Democrats voting in-person over against 2008’s primary between Clinton and Obama.
Conclusion
At this point, Anonymous quite obviously does not have the required proof to point a finger at any particular person or campaign for the findings in our database and of our vulnerability scan. Non-conspiratorial alternative explanations may emerge for why perhaps tens of thousands of voters showed up to the polls expecting to be able to vote with the party they had registered with previously and were either denied or forced to vote provisionally. What is unmistakable, at this point, is that something went very badly wrong well beyond the lack of polling stations. The evidence does point to the possibility that something more malicious is happening.In that vein, we should note that there are now likewise dozens and dozens of reports of Sanders supporters in places like Pennsylvania and New York, with upcoming closed primaries, finding that their own registrations have been switched. One such report arrived in our inbox on Friday morning, the final day for new voter registrations in New York. The emailer told us that the website for New York was going up and down intermittently. We asked what link they were using. When we checked it, our Tor Browser informed us that the website was insecure, presenting an invalid encryption certificate.
Suspicious, for damn sure. We’ll allow readers to draw their own further conclusions at this point.
*We’ve changed Ron’s name as his report was one found in the invitation only Facebook Event page created to help get Bernie Sanders’ supporters to the polls.

What do you do when you really want one person to
win an election, but you understand that by saying that out loud, you’re
actually making him more likely to lose? You pretend to support the
other person, obviously. And if anyone asks you why, you say, uh, well, I don’t like my guy’s toupee.
Such was the situation faced by Will Quigg, a grand dragon with the
KKK in California (you may remember him as one of the KKK members who scuffled with black protesters in Anaheim recently). In a recent interview with the Telegraph, Quigg said that he’s totally down on the Trump campaign. Who does he support, then? Hillary. Um, yeah. Hillary, definitely Hillary.“We want Hillary Clinton to win,” Mr Quigg told The Telegraph. “She is telling everybody one thing, but she has a hidden agenda. She’s telling everybody what they want to hear so she can get elected, because she’s Bill Clinton’s wife, she’s close to the Bushes. [But] once she’s in the presidency, she’s going to come out and her true colours are going to show.You’re sure you’re not a Trump fan, Mr. Quigg?
Asked why he was not therefore supporting Mr Trump, Mr Quigg replied: “We don’t like his hair. We think it’s a toupee. He won’t do what he says he will do. He says he’s going to build a 20-foot high fence along with border with Mexico and make them pay. How’s he going to do that?”Uh huh.
It’s a plan so obvious only this mustachioed doofus could have cooked it up. Quigg’s views on immigration and Mexican immigrants run closely to Trump’s, the Telegraph notes. But any time anyone like Quigg says that Trump Is Good, the corrupt liberal lamestream media interprets it to mean that Trump Is Actually Bad. Solution: pretend to support someone else. n 84-year-old woman who fled Austria as a child with her family to
escape the Nazis was mailed a KKK symbol after openly criticizing GOP
front-runner Donald Trump, according to the Boston Globe.
Louise Mayerson told the paper she received the anonymous envelope in the mail writing a letter that was published in the Globe earlier this month.
“I have found some alarming rhetoric coming from Donald Trump that is apparently finding approval from large numbers of my fellow Americans,” she wrote. “With Trump’s rather ambiguous response concerning his disavowal of the support of former Klansman David Duke, I have reached my breaking point”
Just days later, she received the envelope containing a square white cross and red background, the symbol of America’s oldest and most violent hate group.
“I believe somebody just read that letter, it touched a nerve, and that’s the way they reacted,” Mayerson told the Globe. She contacted the police, who are investigating.
“The more that hateful and denigrating speech becomes commonplace in the public realm from leaders, the greater the likelihood that people will start acting up, whether it’s harassment via the mail or violence,” Robert O. Trestan, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, told the Globe.
The real estate magnate did disavow Duke after being pressed on the matter, at first claiming to not know who he is, then saying, “I disavow.”
“Mr. Trump has disavowed David Duke, the KKK and all other groups that espouse similar views. He will continue to do so,” Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told the Globe in an email.
Despite this, Trump has made it a habit to retweet white supremacist Twitter accounts to his 7 million followers, including one pro-Hitler account that posted a picture of Trump in Nazi garb gassing Jewish Democrat Bernie Sanders.
“We all know the opinions and actions the Ku Klux Klan stands for,” Mayerson wrote in her letter. “Among the fellow Americans the KKK has sought out for its venom are American Jews. Trump’s failure to immediately repudiate Duke chilled my blood. I can see myself needing to flee once more and perhaps return to my native country in Europe, where hateful rhetoric is now strictly forbidden and punishable by law.”

Fair Lawn teen at center of tweets uproar tells of retribution

one February evening watching a presidential debate, one of the teen’s
favorite activities.
Over the cackle of the television, they heard bangs on the door of
their Fair Lawn home and the sound of screeching tires. Her mother,
Debra, went outside and found egg yolks running down the side of their
home, the cracked shells lying on the front porch.The egging was one in a number of cringe-inducing incidents that Bethany Koval says she has faced since she became the subject of a bullying investigation at Fair Lawn High School and her comments criticizing Israel on Twitter were widely shared and debated. Koval complained on social media that the investigation violated her right to free speech, and many online readers agreed.
But she was unprepared for what came next. The incident drew international attention, condemnation from neighbors and shunning by her peers, in part because of her political opinions.
Citing the state’s strict anti-bullying law, Fair Lawn officials said they were forced to investigate because a student had filed a complaint of potential harassment. But legal experts, including the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, faulted the district for too broadly applying the law and contradicting the spirit of free speech.
In an interview with The Record, Koval talked about the aftermath, including the eggs tossed at her home, the times she was called Hitler, a threat of violence and the loss of friends once dear to her. She spoke in a composed and clear way that belied her age.
“I lost a few friends. Really close friends. People I have known since I was young,” Koval said.
Debra Koval appealed for understanding and peace in the community.
“I’m hoping that everybody in the community can accept what the school has found and can also understand that she is a child and that she is entitled to her own opinions on politics,” she said. “But it doesn’t dictate who she is as a person.”
The alleged bullying happened during winter break. Koval wrote on Twitter that kids in school were “talking smack” about her because of her online anti-Israel comments, and a friend asked who it was, saying she was ready to fight in behalf of Bethany. Bethany told her privately who it was, but did not publicly share any name.
The next day, she cheered on Twitter that a “pro-Israel” girl had “unfollowed” her on Twitter and used an expletive to criticize Israel. Administrators at Fair Lawn High did not bring up the other political posts that she had written about Israel, she said.
The school recently finished its investigation and found the incident was not bullying, but rather was “peer conflict.”
In January, when Koval was first called to the principal’s office, she feared she was being targeted because of her comments criticizing Israel. She recorded the conversation, posted recordings online, and wrote in detail about it on Twitter. Then news media, including The New York Times, wrote about what had happened, and it ignited a national debate on free speech.
Thousands of people, most supporting Koval, weighed in online. The high school got a flood of phone calls and emails complaining about their treatment of the teen. And the environment got tense in Fair Lawn.
At school after the story went big, Koval said she didn’t feel comfortable and sensed “aggression,” so she left early. She didn’t return for eight weeks. Koval got tutoring at the public library for her classes, and returned to school about three weeks ago, but only for morning classes.
In the immediate aftermath, she said, she was “mortified” and anxious.
“I was an emotional wreck for the first couple of days,” she said, describing how she alternated between crying and sleeping. It didn’t help, she said, that her parents seemed mad at first.
Debra Koval said she was upset initially because people in the borough — where hundreds of Israelis live — seemed divided and upset over the incident. But later, reading the tweets, she decided they were not that bad and that her daughter was just expressing her opinions.
It hurt when about 100 parents and residents rallied outside the school to express support for the administration’s actions. The protesters said the rally had nothing to do with Koval’s political views, but rather they were acting because the teenager had given out the personal information of another student who disagreed with her. Koval said she told her friend privately, but never made the information public online.
But some viewed the rally as tantamount to adults bullying a teenager. A political debate unfolded on the Facebook page for the event, and some comments were unkind.
“She is a silly stupid girl,” wrote a person using the name Shari Vol, knocking the teen’s political views.
Another man, Fair Lawn parent Lior Cohen, called her “stupid” for her opinions, wrote that she was a bully, and claimed she had a “terrorist organization supporting her.” “When u hate for no reason you need to be punished and your place is in prison!!” he wrote online.
The organizer of the rally and other parents claimed that the school had received “terrorist threats” and that parents feared for their children’s safety. But the Fair Lawn police chief said there were no threats, only people calling to express their political opinions.
“If they really oppose bullying, why did they bully me?” Koval said, referring to the adults who railed against her.
Koval said students sent her messages online that she should kill herself and calling her a Nazi. Others said they wanted to “jump her” in the parking lot, she said.
She returned to school, full |of anxiety. In class, students used to listen to her points of view |and talk to her. Now, some classmates won’t look at her and have “disgusted” expressions on their faces when she talks, she said. |One student referred to her as Hitler, she said.
As she recounted the problems to The Record, her mother interrupted. “You haven’t told me this,” she said.
“I didn’t want to worry you,” Koval said to her mother, who seemed clearly concerned.
Koval has not reported what happened to school officials and does not plan to.
“I don’t like the law. I don’t want to contribute to it,” she said.
She added, “I believe the law is enforced arbitrarily and it’s too vague to uphold any moral standards.”
Fair Lawn High School officials declined to comment, and the superintendent did not respond to messages asking about the alleged harassment or whether they would deal with bullying complaints differently.
School officials say they feel pressure to investigate nearly every bullying complaint because the state anti-bullying law, among the toughest in the country, is so sweeping. The state considers to be bullying incidents where students are targeted for characteristics like race, gender, nationality, family wealth, sexuality or weight. But the law also says the conduct has to be disruptive to the school.
There have been calls to revise or tighten the law from a state task force, from school officials, and even from the brother of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student from Ridgewood whose suicide inspired the 5-year-old law.
James Clementi told The Record that the law had the potential to hurt the students it was intended to help by putting them through an open and sometimes humiliating inquiry. Other critics said the law could lead to free-speech violations by schools.
“Schools just need to be mindful that while they have a legitimate role in policing bullying, they don’t have carte blanche to police student speech from off-campus,” said Alexander Shalom, senior staff attorney at ACLU-N.J., which assisted the Koval family in dealing with the school.
“And they need to be particularly conscious about that when it deals with fraught political issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
Koval’s family is not religious. Her father is a non-practicing Catholic. Her mother, who was raised Jewish, converted to Catholicism but also is not religious. Although she has described herself as an Israeli Jew in the past, Koval said her connections to Israel are uncertain and came from genealogical research she had done on her mother’s family.
Her family is not especially interested in politics. But as a child, Koval said she was consumed with the idea of world peace, even wearing peace signs daily. When she sparred with a friend over Obama’s reelection, she decided she liked debating about world issues.
She delved into research and became a frequent contributor on Twitter, with more than 21,000 tweets on a wide range of issues such as police brutality, the presidential election and human rights in Saudi Arabia, among others. She live-tweets during debates, links to reports and news articles, and spouts opinions about all of it.
Koval said she initially liked the idea of a Jewish state, but her feelings turned sour after Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza in 2014. She wrote on Twitter to criticize the bombings and treatment of Palestinians.
But of all the issues, she knew that this was particularly divisive. In fact, the incident at school was not the only time Israeli politics have upended the family’s life.
A close relative cut off contact with the family because her husband was upset over Koval’s political views on Israel, Koval said. It’s not uncommon for Jewish families to feel tension or even be torn apart because of disagreement over Israel, said Naomi Dann, spokeswoman for the activist group Jewish Voice for Peace. It’s reflective of a “growing generational gap in perspectives on Israel,” she said.
Debra Koval was surprised and pained over it.
“It was a shock to my system that they would cut us off because my child has a point of view,” she said.
Her mother said she did not know about her daughter’s online activism until this all happened. Now she follows her on Twitter and watches over her. But she does not silence her. She said she is impressed by her daughter’s intelligence and that she can have an informed discussion and debate on issues with adults.
But she remains worried. “She’s still navigating through the waters in school. That is really the biggest issue we have right now. It’s acceptance from kids. It’s very hard to walk though halls of the school when you’re not a bully but everyone is treating you like one,” she said.
With all that has happened, Koval said she has no plans of backing down from her politics or her activism.
After the school finished its investigation, and she got the all-clear from her mom, she was back to Twitter, opining about Syria, Donald Trump, Wall Street financial crimes, and yes, Israel.
“I’m just as outspoken, if not more,” she said.

Because I saw a commercial against Donald Trump, a really vicious commercial, comparing what Donald Trump said about preserving America and making America great again to Hitler in Germany preserving Germany and making Germany great again and free again and not beholden to these Communists on one side, politically who were trying to destroy their land and their freedom, and the Jewish capitalists on the other, who were ripping off the nation through the banking system."
That's a lot to digest.
Essentially,
Duke feels that any comparisons made between Trump and "the fellow with
the mustache" during this campaign only serve to Make Hitler Great
Again. Apparently, the brand that brought you Trump Steaks and Trump
Vodka and Trump University is so strong and luxurious it could make a
psychotic mass-murdering dictator look good.

Several days after my March 2 letter about Donald Trump, “Candidate’s wavering over ex-KKK member poses chilling threat,”
was published, I received an envelope containing a photocopy of the Ku
Klux Klan emblem in the mail. I turned it over to the Arlington police,
who followed up several times with me to see if all was well. It has
been, and no crosses have been burned on my lawn yet.
These are indeed dangerous times. A candidate for president
predicts “you’d have riots” if he is not the nominee. We live in the
bubble of a Democratic state, so our vote here for whoever is Trump’s
opponent will prevail in Massachusetts. Yet if Trump becomes president, I
will indeed think about returning to Austria, where for the time being
Nazism is officially forbidden. Getting a KKK emblem anonymously in the
mail is equivalent to getting a swastika. Been there, lived through it.

While most Republican officeholders and candidates oppose abortion rights, few have publicly stated positions on whether there should be legal penalties for women who have abortions. Most believe it is the physicians who perform them who should be prosecuted.
Then, in a statement issued by the campaign after his remarks were made public, Trump said:

The abortion rights advocacy organization NARAL Pro-Choice America called Trump's comments "a new low." The group's president, Ilyse Hogue, said, "Not only is this an unhinged position far from where the American people are, but it's sure to endanger women were he to become president."
March For Life, a group that opposes abortion rights, said Trump's statement was "completely out of touch with the pro-life movement and even more with women who have chosen such a sad thing as abortion." Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, said, "No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion. This is against the very nature of what we are about."
The presidential campaigns were also quick to criticize Trump. Ted Cruz tweeted:

Chinese hackers rob over 18M user credentials via Japanese s
Over 18 million user credentials have been found on a server of a Japanese company who let Chinese hackers use it in their attacks.Japanese police said that between June and November 2015, Chinese hackers used the server of Tokyo company Nicchu Shinsei Corp. to administer attacks on Japanese and international websites. Some of the websites included Yahoo Japan, Facebook, Twitter, Rakuten and others.
In November, Nicchu Shinsei's president and other staff were arrested and indicted.
Credentials for more than 31 web services were found. That includes usernames, passwords, names and birthdates. Police also found an automatic programme that illegally tries to gain website access and confirm if user IDs and passwords are valid.
Each company, for which user credentials were found, has been notified to advise the affected customers and assist them in changing their account passwords.
“We have already taken such measures as changing passwords,” said a spokesperson of Yahoo Japan.
Most victims were users of a popular Chinese chat service that may have been compromised, so Tokyo police have asked Interpol for help in making inquiries at the Chinese company.

PRINCETON,
N.J. — A well-known computer hacker who goes by the name of “Weev” said
he was behind a wave of anti-Semitic, racist fliers that appeared on
printers at more than a dozen college campuses last week.
Covered in swastikas, the fliers, which seemed to appear spontaneously on printers, including those at Princeton University, mentioned “the struggle for global white supremacy.”
Weev
is the alias of Andrew Auernheimer, who in 2010 was part of a group of
hackers that discovered a security loophole on AT&T’s servers and
gained access to the data of 114,000 customers. Mr. Auernheimer was
initially convicted of identity fraud and conspiracy to access a
computer without authorization, but his conviction was overturned on appeal.
Mr.
Auernheimer said in an interview on Monday that he sent the fliers to
every publicly accessible printer in North America. He said he did not
specifically target college campuses.
The
fliers directed readers to The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website. Mr.
Auernheimer said free speech concerns were behind his printing spree.
“My motivation is this: White cultures and only white cultures are
subject to an invasion of foreigners.”
The
debate comes at a time of heightened awareness about speech on campus.
Black student movements at many campuses broke out this school year,
protesting what students saw as the continuing legacies of racism. Last
week, the University of California became the first public university system to adopt an official stance condemning anti-Semitism on their campuses.
After the fliers appeared on Princeton University printers, the administration promised to try to “block any further messages.”
Some
leaders of the black protests here said they saw a discrepancy between
the university’s response to the fliers and what they saw as racism
against black students in the past.
Almost a year ago, after Urban Congo, a student percussion group, performed on campus in loin cloths, which many on campus found offensive,
the university’s president, Christopher L. Eisgruber, sent an email to
the student body that affirmed the school’s commitment to free speech.
He
reiterated that on a trip to India last week, when he told the Indian
Express, “We think it’s very important for people be able to say what it
is they want to say even if it’s offensive to the government or
offensive to some of the other people on campus.”
Asanni York, a member of the Black Justice League, an activist group that led a sit-in in November that called for the removal
of President Woodrow Wilson’s name from the campus because of his
racist positions, said the university’s response to the fliers differed
from past stances. “When it was happening to black students, it was a
matter of free speech,” he said. “Now that it’s happening to white,
Jewish students, it’s something else. There seems to be no conflation of
hate speech and free speech now.”
A
Princeton spokeswoman, Min Pullan, said the fliers were not a question
of free speech. “External messages infiltrating our campus is a
completely different matter. They are not two things that can be
compared,” Ms. Pullan said.
In
addition to Princeton, the messages appeared at the University of
California, Berkeley; Smith College; Brown University; the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst; and Mount Holyoke College, among other places.
Many
university printers allow printing from outside their computer
networks. Mr. Auernheimer said he did not hack into the printers, but
activated them using remote access.
In
response to the fliers, universities have notified the police and begun
to conduct investigations, but it was unclear if Mr. Auernheimer broke
any laws. DePaul University in Chicago, for instance, has turned off
remote printing.
On
Monday morning, anti-gay and transgender fliers appeared on printers at
the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. Mr. Auernheimer said he was not involved with
them.
