This Hack Allows Users to Download Official Windows 7 and 8.1 ISOs For Free

If you want to revert back to the good old Windows 7 or 8.1 you can now download them straight from Microsoft servers and for free.

Though the Microsoft’s TechBench webpage only offers different Windows 10 ISO versions, a user named WZOR has discovered a neat little hack that can change the page contents to reveals different versions Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 ISOs.

The hack which was first reported by Tech Fleece allows users to download almost all Windows 7/8.1 versions for FREE.

The code you can find below comes from WZor a prolific Windows leaker who has a good history of providing information on unreleased Windows versions.

How to download Windows 7/8.1 ISOs

To use the code is very simple. If you are using Chrome, then make sure you are on the Tech Bench page and hit Ctrl+Shift+J to open up Chrome’s console as highlighted in Red below. Attackers Disguise Malware as Magento Patch

Cybercriminals are exploiting an old vulnerability in the Magento ecommerce platform to compromise online shops and steal sensitive information, using a piece of malware disguised as the patch designed to address the flaw.
In February 2015, Magento developers released the SUPEE-5344 patch to fix a critical remote code execution vulnerability dubbed the “shoplift bug.” The security hole is comprised of a chain of weaknesses, including authentication bypass, SQL injection, and remote file inclusion flaws.
More than two months after the patch was released, Dutch hosting firm Byte reported that tens of thousands of Magento installations had still been vulnerable. A series of attacks spotted recently by researchers at Sucuri indicate that there are still many unpatched shops.
The security firm discovered compromised Magento websites hosting a piece of malware that pretends to be the applied SUPEE-5344 patch. The threat is designed to give malicious actors complete control over a vulnerable Magento website by exploiting the “shoplift bug.”

According to Sucuri, the malware is more sophisticated compared to other threats that target Magento installations. Code injected into the targeted site allows attackers to steal payment data and user credentials. The stolen information is encrypted, stored in a file disguised as a JPEG image and sent to pre-defined email addresses.
The targeted details include credit card data, usernames, passwords, IP addresses and server names. The credentials stored in Magento-powered site databases can be used by cybercrooks to access other online accounts because many individuals set the same password on multiple services, Sucuri said.

In addition to stealing valuable information, the threat also includes a series of backdoor functions that allow cybercriminals to execute arbitrary code on the server, change the permissions of Magento files, and delete the file storing the stolen data after it’s no longer needed.
“As we can see, the Magento malware ecosystem is maturing and attracting more hackers, and they’re bringing their arsenal of tried and true tricks and methods from WordPress and Joomla! malware with them,” explained Denis Sinegubko, senior malware researcher at Sucuri. “The growing market share of Magento ecommerce sites (#1 CMS in ecommerce and #4 CMS overall) and potential access to money flows, make attacks even with low success rates worthwhile.”
Last month, Magento developers released a security update to resolve more than 20 vulnerabilities, including ones rated critical that can be exploited to take over e-commerce sites.

The glibc vulnerability which has been discovered by the engineers of Google. They say that exploiting it is very difficult, but there is not surety that it can not be exploited. Security experts said not to take risk and advised the companies to eliminate the remote code execution risk.

"The glibc includes the domain look-up code, that contains bug by which malicious hacker can easily implant the code within a device's memory in order to enable remote code execution attacks." said by Google engineers.

The glibc flaw is not the new one, it's just like the Heartbleed and Shellshock vulnerabilities, and it has been already exploited by attackers. Hundred of applications, services and devices could be at risk if attackers find a way to exploit this flaw, because almost all unix-based system, Linux servers etc used the glibc open-source standard C library.

The glibc flaw is having a number of capability like:-

>> It can easily gain control of systems.

According to the Patrick Carey of Black Duck, "Once the hacker get the access to the systems then he can perform many malicious tasks like to translate domain names to actual machine IP addresses, either directly or through a man-in-the-middle attack."

Carey said that "There is a race between the hackers who exploit the vulnerability and development teams."

Paul Ducklin, senior technologist at Sophos said that

"until or unless operating system distro has a patch, get it,"

The first who release a patch for glibc 2.9 flaw was Red Hat for his Linux distribution and later collaborate with google.

Core Component :

Flaw in glibc can affect almost every program of the Linux version Operating System because Linux OS contain glibc as a core component, but the best thing is that only by patching central copy, it automatically 'patch' the other application taht depends upon it.

Carey said that

"They have to make updates and patch those applications that are available to users like (apps installed on either users desktop or mobile devices)".

IoT devices :

A lot of internet of things (IoT) devices are not affected by this because it do not use glibc instead of that it use large and more compact implementations of this core library. It is also very difficult to check your IoT devices for this flaw because it is very difficult to access the inner workings, so this things are reliant on suppliers to check out the same.

David Flower (managing director for Europe at security firm Carbon Black) said that

“Linux users have believed that there systems are safe and secure. However, the string of high-profile Linux malware – from last year’s Mumblehard, which had gone undetected for five years, to 2012’s Snakso, which gave hackers remote access to servers – has proven this belief to be false, and Google’s discovery of glibc has delivered another significant blow to this misconception, highlighting that a basic flaw has been present within the code itself,”

Flower also said that organisations hasve to patch the vulnerability in order to make there system safe and secure.

The impact of this flaw is more on routers than any other servers and endpoints. Reason behind this only the more robustness, memory protection etc.

Flower said that

“However, protections of this nature are not implemented in integrated devices like routers due to their expensive nature, both in costs and hardware requirements. As a result, it is much easier to create the buffer overflow needed to insert malicious code to open a backdoor or disable the device altogether,”.

Impact more on routers

He believes the impact of this bug is likely to be felt more on routers than servers and endpoints, because these typically contain more robust memory protection and separation techniques to control what a CPU executes.

Hacktivists with the Anonymous hacking collective have announced plans to launch widespread DDoS strikes against the Israeli military to protest the ongoing detention of Mohammed Al-Qeeq, a Palestinian journalist who has been on hunger strike since November 2015.
Al-Qeeq is a reporter for a Saudi news outlet and was arrested at his Ramallah home on 21 November by Israeli police amid claims was linked to Hamas. According to the Independent, he has been in 'administrative detention' ever since, which is permitted under Israeli law to detain someone without referring to a judge on the basis they are a threat to the national security. In the week after his detention he went on hunger strike and after roughly 80 days had lost most of his sight, voice and hearing abilities.

"We are calling on all citizens of the world to join us in this fight to free an illegally detained man. We are organising many ongoing operations in relation to this issue," said the hacktivists in a statement posted to PasteBin, who have branded the so-called 'emergency operation' as #OpAlQeeq, #OpSaveGaza and #FreeAlQeeq.
The statement requested those taking part in the operation to carry out a range of tasks including calling local Israeli embassys, taking to the streets in protest and raising awareness on social media. However, the note also called for major hacking activity against 'Israeli military forces' and posted a slew of IP addresses relating to a range of websites including the defence ministry and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).

"Since it was the Israeli military forces that arrested and detained Mohammed Al Qeeq, then Israel military forces, his blood is on your hands," the statement said. "We are calling on all 'anons' and hacktivists across the world to focus fire on Israeli military forces. Included [are] all websites associated with the Israeli military. Dump them, load them with viruses, DDoS them, break them, whatever you can do or see fit. Security analysis is already underway on all targets. Targets are listed by priority level. If this man dies in the custody of the Israeli military, Israel you can expect hell."
Anonymous has a long history with hacking Israeli targets. Last year, in a video posted online, the group vowed an 'electronic holocaust' against the nation in apparent statement in support of Palestine. "As we did many times, we will take down your servers, government websites, Israeli military websites, and Israeli institutions," said a masked anonymous individual. "We will erase you from cyberspace in our electronic holocaust."
Meanwhile, in a separate attack in 2012, hackers attacks and shut down a number of websites including the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange after they were threatened by a Saudi hacker. A spokeswoman for the stock exchange confirmed at the time that the site had come under attack, but claimed that trading systems were not affected.

Even most recently, following the hack at the Department of Justice that resulted in the loss of thousands of federal credentials, the hacker using the @DotGovs twitter profile who was thought to be behind the incident frequently signed off with the now-familiar phrase: #FreePalestine.

WordPress Sites Used to Power Layer 7 DDoS Attacks

Tens of thousands of WordPress websites have been recently used to launch Layer 7 distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, security researchers at Sucuri reveal.

Layer 7 attacks, which are also known as http flood attacks, involve disrupting a server by exhausting its resources at the application layer and not at the network layer. These type of attacks require fewer requests and lower bandwidth to cause damage, as they can force resource consumption on most PHP applications, databases, and content management systems (CMS).

Most recently, Sucuri researchers observed that WordPress sites with enabled pingback feature are used to disrupt the availability of other websites, through flooding the web with Layer 7 requests that result in very large DDoS attacks. Daniel Cid, Founder & CTO of Sucuri, notes that 13 percent of the DDoS attempts the security company tracks are pingback DDoS attacks, which makes them a very popular.

The researchers have observed 26,000 different WordPress sites that were generating a sustained rate of 10,000 to 11,000 HTTPS requests per second against one website. Furthermore, they noticed that the attack would peak at certain intervals, reaching almost 20,000 HTTPS requests per second, and that it lasted for more than half a day.

The attacker was using a series of IP addresses in the 185.130.5.0/24 range to control the “botnet” of WordPress sites, and they were able to successfully conduct the attack despite an IP logging feature that WordPress added in version 3.9. By recording the IP address of where the pingback request originated, the CMS was looking to diminish the value of using it as part of an attack, as the attacker’s IP shows in the log user agent.

However, Cid explains that the pingback technique is still being used mainly because website owners rarely check the user agent logs. Furthermore, he notes that, given that the attack comes from thousands of different IPs, network-based firewalls won’t try to stop the attacks because they only do rate limiting per IP address.

The researchers discovered that the majority of IP addresses used in this attack were sites on popular VPS/Cloud/Dedicated server providers: Amazon AWS, Digital Ocean, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Hetzner, OVH and Linode.

To avoid such attacks, website admins are advised to disable the pingback feature, which would ensure that the site is not used to attack other domains. Building on its software defined networking strategy, networking company Juniper recently partnered with Affirmed Networks, a leader in virtualized mobile networks. Through the deal, the companies plan to develop solutions that can help service providers embrace next -generation NFV (network functions virtualization) based architectures. With the telecom industry invariably moving from hardware to software, the architecture supporting mobile networks is going to be virtualized on a big scale going forward. Considering this, and the fact that Juniper earns almost two-thirds of its revenues from service providers, the partnership seems to have a lot to offer for Juniper. The company believes that by combining its networks’ virtualization portfolio with Affirmed’s industry leading technology, it can effectively address the need for scaling virtualized mobile networks for service providers.

The SDN opportunity is big, and Juniper is already doing more than its rival Cisco on this front. Last year, it dissaggregated its network operating system Junos from the hardware, in order to allow customers to use its software over third-party hardware and vice versa. With Cisco having a clear advantage on customer reach and the IoT (Internet of things) front, Juniper could rejoice over that fact that it may be edging ahead in the SDN arena.

The Motivation Behind The Partnership

There is an industry-wide shift in demand from hardware networking solutions to software-based ones, and this is likely to accelerate going forward. SDxCentral, along with Plexxi and Lightspeed Venture Partners, estimated the global SDN market size at $3.4 billion in 2014 and they expect the market to jump to $35 billion by the end of 2018. In 2014, only 4% of total network spending was for SDN, which is projected to go up to 40% over the next three years. The emergence and growth of cloud computing, big data and mobility is responsible for this rapid hardware to software shift. The aforementioned metrics reflect the massive growth potential for companies focused on SDN, which explains why Juniper is interested in pushing its software ahead of hardware.

Network function virtualization, which essentially refers to the use of software to virtualize network node functions into an interconnected chain, has several advantages over traditional networks. How Would The Alliance Work?

Dell to Customers: Report ‘Service Tag’ Scams

Computer maker Dell is asking for help in an ongoing probe into the source of customer information that appears to have somehow landed in the laps of fraudsters posing as Dell computer support technicians. KrebsOnSecurity readers continue to report being called by scammers posing as Dell support personnel who offer “proof” that they’re with Dell by rattling off the unique Dell “service tag” code printed on each Dell customer’s PC or laptop, as well as information from any previous (legitimate) service issues the customer may have had with Dell.

In January, Ars Technica’s Dan Goodin wrote about a guy who’d been complaining to Dell for six months about the very same problem, in which the scammers try to convince the customer that their computer is infected and in need of professional services. Dell responded at the time that its customer’s data protection was a top priority, and it reminded customers that Dell doesn’t make unsolicited calls asking to charge to fix an issue they did not report or previously request help with unless they have signed up for premium support services.

I first heard about this in December 2015 from Israeli resident Yosef Kaner, who reported receiving a phone call from someone with a thick Indian accent claiming to be from Dell technical support.
“He said that they had been monitoring my computer usage for the past couple of weeks, and that I had downloaded a dangerous piece of software,” Kaner said. “He offered to help me remove said software. Understanding that this was a scam, I asked him for a callback number. He gave me one. He also, though, knew my name and gave me the Service Tag of my PC. I thanked him and hung up. Then I Googled the number he gave me. It was a known number from a known scam.”

Almost every week this past month, I’ve received similar messages from other readers. Like this one, from Lucy Thomson of Washington, D.C. Thomson is the author of the ABA Data Breach and Encryption Handbook, and a former Justice Department fraud prosecutor.
“So I am not happy that Dell has had this breach and many people are potentially in jeopardy,” Thomson said. “I confirmed with two of the people who called on two different days, one who said he was in San Jose, CA and another who said he was in India, the nature of the PII and service records they have. All of it was correct and they have quite a bit of contact information and service records with specific dates of calls and service.”
Thomson said she called 1-866-383-4713 (the real Dell’s support line) and told the technician about having received calls every day for the previous five days from people claiming to be Dell certified technicians or who worked for Dell.

“I then told him they had all my PII and Dell service records for the computer I purchased from Dell in 2012,” Thomson recalled. “He said they had received calls ‘from people like you,’ and ‘many customers have called.’ In response to my question about why they had not sent data breach notifications, he said ‘The legal team is in charge. The legal team is working with the FBI on this.’ He said that twice. At the end of the call he said ‘we are creating a platform so this will never happen again.'”
Reader Peter Sullivan sent me this note two days ago:

I received a phone call this afternoon from a male with an Asian (Indian?) accent purporting to be a Dell support tech advising me that my computer had been infected with potentially damaging malware. As you can imagine, I was more than a little skeptical. After asking him several challenging questions, I said ‘I have two Dell computers, which one is infected?”
The caller gave me the Service Tag for my XPS 15 (L521x)! When I suggested that I would like to call him back, he told me that the support #s are very busy (!!) and I wouldn’t be able to get through. “ if I give you your Express Service Code will you trust me then?,” he said proceeded to give me the correct number.
I hung up and did a quick search, coming up with some problems from 2015 involving Dell System Detect that had exposed some Dell computers (I thought that I had responded to that issue). To be on the safe side I called Dell Tech Support and they told me that they don’t call … I wasn’t surprised.

Dell spokesman David Frink said the company has “no indication that customer information used in the sames reported recently were obtained through an external attack,” but he declined to respond to direct questions about whether the company had ruled out an insider attack, such as a current or previous channel partner that got hacked or illegally sold Dell customer information.

“Fact is, these phishing scams are increasingly more sophisticated, they are touching not only technology companies, but all industry, and we have devoted considerable resources to addressing them,” Frink said. “We have no indication that customer information used in the scams reported recently were obtained through an external attack. We continuously evaluate our internal physical and technical security measures to determine if there are additional efforts that would further ensure this customer data is secure. And, we investigate any customer complaint received when there is sufficient information to investigate.”
He pointed concerned Dell customers to information on the company’s site that warns customers to be on alert for phone scams.

“We also have provided an intake form to make it easy for customers to submit information for our teams to investigate,” Frink wrote in an email to KrebsOnSecurity.

So if this wasn’t the result of a rogue partner, exactly how have the scammers managed to glean so much information about Dell customers and any previous service issues? Ars Technica’s Dan Goodin posited one possibility: That the scammers exploited a vulnerability in Dell computers that became public in November.
“It resided on Dell PCs that came pre-installed with digital certificates that made it easy for attackers to cryptographically impersonate any website on the Internet,” Goodin wrote. “The same certificate, it turned out, also allowed hackers to surreptitiously obtain the unique service tag Dell assigns to computers it sells.”
Goodin said that theory still doesn’t explain how scammers obtained contact information and support histories.
“The vulnerability, however, does demonstrate the plausibility that hackers could have devised a way to obtain personal details belonging to Dell customers,” he wrote. “For the time being, owners of Dell computers should presume their support histories and purchase and contact information has been compromised, and act accordingly.”

报道说，中国警方从去年7月开始在中国全国范围内抓捕了约250名维权律师、律师助理、以及活动人士。联合国人权高级专员办公室发布的声明说，虽然这些被抓捕律师中的许多人后来被释放，但上个月有15名律师被当局正式逮捕。当局指控其中10名律师犯有“颠覆国家政权”罪。若被判有罪，这些律师可能被判15 年或终身监禁的处罚。

联合国人权高级专员办公室的声明还对中国政府的一项管理非政府组织的法律草案表达了关注，认为它可能遏制中国的言论、集会和结社自由。

法新社的有关报道说，中国政府起草的一项有关非政府组织的法律草案授权警方把在中国运作的外国非政府组织（NGO）置于严密监督下。草案法律规定，在中国运作的外国非政府组织除了必须至少与一个中国政府部门挂钩“合作”以外，还必须向中国警察提交“工作计划”，详细说明他们的活动，才能获得当局批准。对此，在中国的外国慈善机构和商业团体都表示，该法律若通过实施，会严重制约他们在中国的业务。中国非政府组织法草案有关“国家安全”的模糊言辞令人担心，这可能为中国警方提供过分广泛的制裁权。

香港的“中国维权律师关注组”今年一月底发表声明说，中国当局目前已正式逮捕了19名律师和活动人士，而另有266名律师在中国当局近来的打压行动中被暂时拘捕和审讯。

(博讯北京时间2016年2月17日转载)      大陸的非同齡朋友們：你們好!我是來自香港的「70後」。可能你們同樣在關注旺角衝突中37名被告在九龍城裁判法院出庭受審；這37人中，最年輕的只有17歲。但我奇怪，大陸每天上演無數的寃假錯案，早前被掘打成姦殺判死刑被處決之內蒙古少年，只有18歲。你們卻不去關注？！
    我們正在歡度農曆新年，為什麼會有大陸的非同齡人成為順民？互聯網如此發達，大陸人就是沒渠道相互瞭解、探討，連上社交網絡也需翻牆！這一次，有些話，我想心平氣和、坦誠地對你們說：
     你們是在六四大屠殺後成長起來的，我把你們稱為是「六四後一代」。我們是在英國管治下成長起來的，我願意自稱為「港英一代」。我們和你們不同，都對自己的道德抱有夢想，對核心價值抱有期待。

香港和大陸青年，我們已經在網絡上爭論了太久，如果中共永遠居高臨下、指責香港，將永遠也看不清彼此，更看不見歷史的真相：
    指責香港「數典忘祖」的大陸青年，你們也許知道電影《十月圍城》，卻不一定瞭解王學圻有真實的角色原型，他是一直傾力贊助國民政府革命的香港富商李煜堂(1851-1936); 並非贊助中國共產黨。
    你們也許知道抗美援朝，卻不一定知道是香港企業家霍英杔，突破西方國家、港英當局「全面禁運」鐵幕運來大量物資; 當中還有毒品，而且搶奪了本港資源！
    你們也許看過紀錄片中的「大逃港」場面，卻不一定知道1989年6月4日的北京馬路上，數百名中國人以躺倒的肉身，阻擋住中共的坦克，高聲呼喚素不相識的大陸同胞：「快跳車!快跑!」

    指責香港「忘恩負義」的大陸青年，我們也許知道九十年代的亞洲金融危機，卻不一定知道1998年3月19日，人民大會堂裡擲地有聲：「只要特區提出要求，中央將不惜一切代價維護香港的繁榮穩定，保護它的聯繫匯率制度!」係得個講字，港府是自家打的大鱷！
    我們也許熟知家常粵菜的「蠔油菜心」，卻必知道這是500多個供港蔬菜基地的女工冒著烈日，按「供港菜心」是用真金白銀買來的;
    我們也許知道香港每4天才供水4小時的歷史，卻必知道，東江水是用數以億計錢買來的，就算有時水太多，也不准不買不准中斷!
    九七回歸，回歸的不就只是身體，更沒有靈魂。從歷史到今天，正是香港和大陸互相攻擊，彼此排斥，才讓國共內戰爭的難民能逃港！折斷野蠻三反五反的尖刀，穿越十年文革的浩劫，推倒中共鐵網的阻隔而不可斷絕!
    斗轉星移，看到有大陸非同齡人在互聯網上留言「我願當中共孽子」，有大陸非同齡人支持所謂的「反台」和全國強拆時，我們感到驚詫。為什麼同為人類，我們之間卻有了這麼大的疏離和隔膜？

    也許有人會說，大陸年輕人要做「世界強國」，追求的是西式「名牌房產股票債劵」。但你們是否忘了，這些概念是西方的資本主義獨創，更是中共曾否定的西方文明標誌。2400多年前的孔子，在中共建國後打倒至近年才停，妄想什麼「天下為公，世界大同」;2200多年前的孟子，也在中共建國後打倒至近年才停，喊不出「民為貴、社稷次之、君為輕」；900多年前，范仲淹寫下「先天下之憂而憂，後天下之樂而樂」；300多年前，黃宗羲宣告「天下為主，君為客」······ 這些文化一直由日本人保存！
    追求「獨裁專政」就是錯，社會主義核心價值觀也可以將「獨裁專政」放棄其中。你們可以充分想像「自我良好」，但不應忘記，共産主義本身就是脫離自己的民族文化傳統、憑空移植的。

    即使同源於漢唐中原文化，韓國、越南、日本的民主模式也各有不同；同樣的共産主義，在蘇聯、在古巴、在北韓，只是改變了制度，卻沒能解決仇恨、戰亂和貧窮。
    你們知道，我們尋求改變，還因為讓人感覺逼仄、失望的中共社會現實。
    站在歷史的節點，中共理念遭遇層層困惑，中國發展也面臨種種瓶頸。當你們把遭遇的現實問題歸咎於貪腐時，是否想過，你們以為的問題的根源，也許正是解決問題的鑰匙？是否想過，可以回過頭來擁抱一下民主和自由，但卻被你們輕視、無視甚至敵視的這個大潮流？進步不是單向的，更意味著中共與世界的擁抱、融合和重新認識。

    和你們不同，我們也給「世界公民」這個概念有贊有彈。香港最大的魅力，就是被中共侵食中、對自由觀點和市場的巨大破壞力。現在是你們摘下有色眼鏡，真正去瞭解政權的時候了。如果說，前150多年，「中華奇醜」的秘訣在於，你們封鎖了世界文明的出入口;未來的150年，再次創造「中華奇醜」的關鍵，應當就在，你們回身真正封上只有數寸的民族眼晴。
    我們想告訴你們，對於大陸青年，採納馬克思精華、放棄東方懷抱，就是一個「非A即B」的選擇。站在社資的交匯點上，大陸之所以能吸引西方列強的目光，只是因為你身後有龎大巿場的璀璨光芒。
    邱立本先生曾用金庸小說打比方，形容自己和大陸學者的讀書進境：「實際上大家都是在練九陰真經，但彼此看對方的練法都像是『倒練』九陰真經，不過殊途同歸：到了21世紀，大家的武功都在同一個層次了。」在我們這一代，香港清楚知道這是小說，但你們則當成歴史。

In the latest sign that China’s long-touted “opening up” is reversing into a “closing down,” a Chinese ministry has issued new rules that ban any foreign-invested company from publishing anything online in China, effective next month.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s new rules (link in Chinese) could, if they were enforced as written, essentially shut down China as a market for foreign news outlets, publishers, gaming companies, information providers, and entertainment companies starting on March 10. Issued in conjunction with the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), they set strict new guidelines for what can be published online, and how that publisher should conduct business in China.

“Sino-foreign joint ventures, Sino-foreign cooperative ventures, and foreign business units shall not engage in online publishing services,” the rules state. Any publisher of online content, including “texts, pictures, maps, games, animations, audios, and videos,” will also be required to store their “necessary technical equipment, related servers, and storage devices” in China, the directive says. Any “online publication service units” needs to get prior approval from SARFT if they want to cooperate on a project with any foreign company, joint venture, or individual.

Foreign media companies including Thomson Reuters, Dow Jones, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, and the New York Times have invested millions of dollars—maybe even hundreds of millions collectively—in building up China-based news organizations in recent years, and publishing news reports in Chinese, for a Chinese audience. Many of these media outlets are currently blocked in China, so top executives have also been involved in months of behind-the-scenes negotiations to try to get the blocks lifted.

Gaming companies including Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox have been making inroads in China with varying degrees of success, while social media giants like Facebook are clamoring to get in—all drawn by the country’s massive online population, estimated at nearly 700 million people.

But the new rules specify that, aside from approved projects, only 100% Chinese companies will produce any content that goes online, and then only after approval from Chinese authorities and the acquisition of an online publishing license. The Chinese language version of China’s 2015 foreign investment handbook also prohibited foreign investment in “network publishing services,” but the English-language version did not (pdf, pg. 39), and that ban was little-noticed by foreign companies looking to enter China.

Companies will then be expected to self-censor, and not publish any information at all that falls into several broad categories, including:

harming national unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity
disclosing state secrets, endangering national security, or harming national honor and interests
inciting ethnic hatred or ethnic discrimination, undermining national unity, or going against ethnic customs and habits
spreading rumors, disturbing social order, or undermining social stability
insulting or slandering others, infringing upon the legitimate rights of others
endangering social morality or national cultural tradition

Quartz contacted the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology from Hong Kong asking for further clarification on how the rules would work, but the ministry said it could only reply to faxed questions that came from a reporter with a mainland press card.

While the new rules sound draconian, how effective they may be at shutting foreign companies out of China’s internet entirely remains questionable, You Yunting, an IP lawyer and partner at Shanghai’s Debund Law Offices, told Quartz. The State Internet Information Office, under “internet czar” Lu Wei, is actually in charge of internet policy in China, he points out, but these rules were put out by the technology ministry and SARFT. “Websites don’t even belong to their management,” he said. Lu has been reaching out to foreign internet giants, including a high-powered meeting in Seattle last September.

Scott Livingston, a Hong Kong-based lawyer specializing in Chinese technology law, disagrees. “SARFT has many duties, but with respect to the internet its main task is to regulate online audio and video content, which includes administering the ‘License for Publication of Audio-Visual Programs Through Information Networks,'” (link in Chinese) he said. MIIT, the regulation’s other drafter, “is the nation’s principal internet regulator and the primary body responsible for licensing and registering Chinese websites.”

Even so, they will be tough to enforce, Ying Chan, the director of the journalism program at the University of Hong Kong, told Quartz. “Using rules of the print age to govern the internet does not work,” she said. “How do you license media in an age when everyone could become a writer and publisher? With these set of regulations, the government is fighting both market forces and technology.”

Nonetheless, the rules are yet another indicator that under president Xi Jinping, Beijing is moving to consolidate control, reduce foreign influence, and wipe out any dissent in China.

如今中國，在習近平拋棄鄧小平「韜光養晦」原則之後，對外積極挑戰美國主導的國際秩序，軍事上建構阻卻美國介入東亞的武力，對內則打壓異己不遺餘力；這是習版「中國夢」的執行方策，其效應尚待檢驗。不過，一個不尊重自己人民權利和基本尊嚴的政府，難以列入負責任的國際社會成員；野心勃勃且堅持以力服人的國家，也不免在世界舞台成為麻煩製造者。習近平的「中國夢」究竟是他個人的美夢，還是周邊國家的噩夢，南海軍事化顯然指向噩夢。

This new scam was unveiled by the researchers from Tripwire, who found scammers making use of “robo calls” for scamming the users. Once the user has answered the call, the call is transferred to India where a worker directs on what he should do to get rid of the malware which in reality are the steps for installing the malware on the system.
What is the malware about?
While analyzing the malware the scammers were trying to input into user’s PCs, the researchers found they were aimed for stealing user’s financial data like login credentials of online banking and credit card details.

So every smartphone, every desktop computer or laptop has a specific MAC address which makes you easily traceable.
Speaking of which, an online teenager hacker group called “VandaSec” has claimed that they have found IS (previously ISIL/ISIS) twitter accounts back to Britain’s department of Works and Pensions.
Hackers have said that they were able to trace back three of the ISIS sympathizer accounts directly to the DWP office in London. These accounts were traced from the MAC address of devices from which they were originated. The origin of these accounts was Saudi Arabia, but further research showed that these accounts link back to London.

U.S. Hacked Into Iran’s Critical Civilian Infrastructure For Massive Cyberattack, New Film Claims

A new documentary on “Stuxnet”, the joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear program, reveals it was just a small part of a much bigger cyber operation against the nation’s military and civilian infrastructure under the code name “NITRO ZEUS”.

The United States hacked into critical civilian and military infrastructure in Iran to allow its operatives to disable the country with a devastating series of cyberattacks at a moment’s notice, a documentary will claim this week.

The targets of the U.S. hacking operations, covered by the code name “NITRO ZEUS,” include power plants, transport infrastructure, and air defenses, the film will state, with agents entering these protected systems nightly to make sure the attacks were still deployable.

The film, Zero Days, by Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, which is set to premiere at the Berlin film festival on Wednesday, will claim that the U.S.-Israel “Stuxnet” worm — which destroyed around 1 in 5 of the centrifuges used in Iran’s nuclear program — was just a small part of a much larger set of offensive capabilities developed against the nation.
Citing at least five confidential U.S. military or intelligence sources with direct knowledge of the programs, the film claims:
• U.S. hackers working from the Remote Operations Center (ROC) in Fort Meade, Maryland, have penetrated huge swaths of Iran’s critical infrastructure, and were ready to launch disabling attacks alongside any military operation;
• Some within the State Department and the National Security Agency (NSA) expressed concern around the legality and ethics of some of these operations, which risked disabling civilian as well as military infrastructure;
• Israel modified the Stuxnet worm, targeted at Iranian nuclear facilities, making it far more aggressive, then unilaterally launched the new version. This was the one discovered by security researchers, who eventually traced it back to the two nations’ intelligence agencies;
• Intelligence from the UK’s GCHQ agency was used in deploying Stuxnet against Iranian facilities.

BuzzFeed News received an advance viewing of Gibney’s film, and was given access to additional reporting material and research notes used for its production. These materials have been supplemented by independent reporting, including from previously published NSA documents from the cache leaked by Edward Snowden.

Iran’s nuclear facility in Natanz was the primary target of “Olympic Games”, the official code name for the Stuxnet program. Jigsaw Productions.

“Stuxnet” was the name given to an unusually sophisticated computer worm when it was discovered by security researchers in 2010. The code was unprecedentedly complex, and included four “zero days” — previously unknown vulnerabilities that guarantee an attack’s success and trade for hundreds of thousands of dollars a time on the black market.

Researchers quickly concluded that due to its complexity and use of valuable, previously unknown vulnerabilities, it was almost certainly the work of one or more state actors.
Eventually, it was revealed the Stuxnet worm was the product of a long collaboration between the U.S. and Israel, code-named “Olympic Games”, to tackle Iran’s nuclear program without resorting to airstrikes or assassinations, both of which Israel had previously deployed or considered in its bid to stall Iran’s progress.

The worm worked by changing the programming of the computers controlling the centrifuges used to enrich uranium, reporting back normal behaviors to the facility’s operators while actually implanting a series of destructive actions, including even causing the centrifuges to speed up until the pressure on the system’s delicate components caused them to explode.
Both nations, the film reports, had full and independent access to the source code of the worm, which in its earlier versions did not spread aggressively, helping keep it contained and undiscoverable.
When a version infected numerous unintended targets in 2009, the workers in the ROC switched almost full-time to silently cleaning up infected computers to prevent the worm’s discovery — for fears this would lead to researchers determining who was behind it, potentially prompting retaliatory measures.

This was, Gibney reports, a significant source of anger when several months later Israel reportedly unilaterally released its modified version of the worm. This version traveled far more easily across many more systems, eventually infecting hundreds of thousands of computers in more than 115 countries, inevitably leading to the worm being analysed in detail by security researchers. This in turn led to the public revelation that the U.S. and Israel were behind the attack, despite neither country publicly acknowledging responsibility.

“The secrecy of the operation has been blown,” a U.S. source told the filmmakers.
“Our friends in Israel took a weapon that we jointly developed — in part to keep Israel from doing something crazy — and then used it on their own in a way that blew the cover of the operation and could’ve led to war.”
In the months following the publication of a New York Times article identifying the nations behind Stuxnet, U.S. banks suffered a series of crippling cyberattacks publicly ascribed to Iran. State-sponsored cyberattacks have risen in frequency and severity since, with the U.S. openly accusing China of engaging in operations against American companies and public bodies on multiple occasions.

However, the Zero Days film reveals that the “Olympic Games” attack on Iran’s nuclear program was a virtual sideshow when compared with a much wider range of operations against Iranian infrastructure, all covered by the code name “NITRO ZEUS.”

NITRO ZEUS was formally a “caveat” to Sensitive Compartmentalized Information, more commonly referred to as a “read-on.” In practice this refers to some of the most sensitive information held by the NSA and other U.S. intelligence agencies, meaning a controlled list of named individuals were aware of the term and its scope.

The program was run out of U.S. Cyber Command and the NSA, with operations conducted out of the ROC in Fort Meade (motto: “Your data is our data, your equipment is our equipment — anytime, any place, by any legal means”) with a mixture of civilian and military staff.

The operations under NITRO ZEUS included Iran’s industrial facilities, command-and-control, electrical grid, air defense, and transportation. Gibney describes the operations as “likely the largest and most complex cyber war plan the U.S. has ever created.”
The film’s sources said NITRO ZEUS involved hundreds of personnel over several years, and cost “hundreds of millions” of dollars — building programs ready to “disrupt, degrade, and destroy” Iranian infrastructure with code intended to leave no direct clues as to who was responsible for the attacks.
NITRO ZEUS was not just some theoretical battle plan, Gibney reports. Operatives had already gained access to all the relevant systems to execute the attacks if the order was given, and checked back on a near-nightly basis to ensure all the access points were still live and operational, and that the attack code wouldn’t interfere with any other code on the systems, to reduce the risk of discovery — or accidental triggering. The number of implants in Iranian targets was reportedly in the hundreds of thousands.
The film’s supporting research material also reveals an array of concerns about such capabilities within the U.S. government and agencies. The State Department was seen by those in other agencies as a “wet blanket” when it came to operations for expressing concerns about violating the sovereignty of third-party nations’ cyberspace, or about operations that could have significant impact on civilians.

The legality around cyberattacks that disable real-world infrastructure is complex and not yet established under international law, though targets such as power stations would often count as legitimate targets in conventional warfare.

However, one confidential source expressed concerns to Gibney about the extent of NITRO ZEUS, saying some planners had “no fucking clue” as to the consequences of some of the proposed attacks.
“You take down part of a grid,” they told him, “you can accidentally take down electricity in the entire country.”

Other U.S. cyberattacks are believed to have already had such inadvertent side effects, albeit on a less dramatic scale. In November 2012, almost the entirety of the Syrian internet suddenly went offline, in what was believed at the time to be a deliberate act by the Syrian government to thwart opposition groups.
However, in August 2014, Edward Snowden told Wired magazine the outage had actually been caused accidentally by NSA hackers attempting to gain access to the routers providing the backbone of the country’s networks.
Even those who are usually among U.S. intelligence’s staunchest defenders have expressed concerns about the country’s cyber capabilities and doctrine for using them.
Michael Hayden, a former director of both the CIA and the NSA, told Gibney the U.S. action risks creating new international norms of cyber warfare.
“I know no operational details and don’t know what anyone did or didn’t do before someone decided to use the weapon, all right,” he said. “I do know this: If we go out and do something, most of the rest of the world now thinks that’s a new standard, and it’s something they now feel legitimated to do as well.
“But the rules of engagement, international norms, treaty standards, they don’t exist right now.”

In public remarks, Hayden once noted of Stuxnet “this has the whiff of 1945. Someone just used a new weapon.” He also said the secrecy around the U.S.’s cyber programs was stifling the ability to have a public debate about their consequences.
“This stuff is hideously overclassified and it gets into the way of a mature public discussion as to what it is we as a democracy want our nation to be doing up here in the cyber domain,” Hayden said.
“Now, this is a former director of NSA and CIA saying this stuff is overclassified. One of the reasons it’s as highly classified as it is… This is a peculiar weapon system. This is a weapon system that’s come out of the espionage community, and so those people have a habit of secrecy.”

The film seeks to warn that the norms of nation states’ cyberattacks — “the norm in cyberspace is do whatever you can get away with,” one contributor states — have been set by Stuxnet and its discovery, and leave the U.S. at risk as a major and vulnerable potential target.

“It’s much more difficult in the cyber area to construct an international regime based on treaty commitments and rules of the road and so forth,” explains Gary Samore, Obama’s WMD czar from 2009 to 2013. “Although we’ve tried to have discussions with the Chinese and Russians and so forth about that, but it’s very difficult.”
BuzzFeed News asked the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for comment on the “Olympic Games” and NITRO ZEUS revelations, as well as a series of questions on how the targeting decisions under the programs were made, whether the U.S. had changed how it cooperates with Israel on cyber operations, and whether the U.S. supports introducing treaties governing the use of cyber weapons. The agency declined to comment.

The Zero Days film will also raise questions for the UK’s GCHQ intelligence agency, which cooperates closely with the NSA as part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing coalition. The film reports intelligence from GCHQ provided part of the bedrock for deploying Olympic Games, as well as for NITRO ZEUS operations, though it does not reveal whether GCHQ was aware of the final use to which its information was being put.
This would reflect a longstanding legal concern within GCHQ as to whether its intelligence could be used for U.S. or Israeli operations that would not be allowed under UK law.
A top-secret memo prepared ahead of a 2013 visit by then GCHQ director Iain Lobban to the NSA shows such matters — especially in relation to Israel and Iran — had been a topic of discussion at the top of both agencies.

The memo, published by The Intercept, notes “it is possible Sir Iain may ask about what safeguards NSA may be putting in place to prevent UK data from being provided to others, the Israelis for instance, who might use that intelligence to conduct lethal operations.”
The memo also noted Lobban may ask for “views on what is going to happen with Iran, to include potential Israeli support,” and reminds its recipients that GCHQ and the NSA worked “jointly” on “high-priority surges” including in response to Iran’s discovery of FLAME, another sophisticated cyberattack aimed at the nation.
BuzzFeed News asked GCHQ whether its contribution to Olympic Games and NITRO ZEUS had been made with the prior consent and knowledge of the agency, who authorised such cooperation if so, and how such operations would sit within UK law.
“We have no comment to make,” a spokesperson for GCHQ said.

Hopelessly broken wireless burglar alarm lets intruders go undetected

A lack of encryption opens SimpliSafe system up to game-over "replay" attacks.

A security system used in more than 200,000 homes has an unfixable flaw that allows tech-savvy burglars to disarm the alarm from as far away as a few hundred feet.
The wireless home security system from SimpliSafe is marketed as costing less than competing ones and being easier to install, since it doesn't use wires for one component to communicate with another. But according to Andrew Zonenberg, a researcher with security firm IOActive, the system's keypad uses the same personal identification number with no encryption each time it sends a message to the main base station. That opens the system to what's known as a replay attack, in which an attacker records the authentication code sent by the valid keypad and then recycles it when sending rogue commands transmitted over the same radio frequency.

"Unfortunately, there is no easy workaround for the issue since the keypad happily sends unencrypted PINs out to anyone listening," Zonenberg wrote in a blog post published Wednesday. "Normally, the vendor would fix the vulnerability in a new firmware version by adding cryptography to the protocol. However, this is not an option for the affected SimpliSafe products because the microcontrollers in currently shipped hardware are one-time programmable. This means that field upgrades of existing systems are not possible; all existing keypads and base stations will need to be replaced."
The hack required about $250 (£175) worth of commodity hardware to build a microcontroller and a few hundreds lines of code to make it communicate with the SimpliSafe base station. With that one-time investment out of the way, an intruder would then hide the device within a few hundred feet of the SimpliSafe base station and wait for the owner to activate or deactivate the alarm. The attacker could later replay the captured PIN along with a deactivation command to prevent the alarm from sounding during a home break in.

Zonenberg said he made attempts through multiple channels to alert SimpliSafe officials to his findings and never received a response. According to the company's LinkedIn page, the system is used in more than 200,000 homes. Update: In an e-mail sent after this Ars post went live, a SimpliSafe official wrote:

While any wireless system is susceptible to this type of attack from a sufficiently savvy and motivated intruder, our systems can be backed up with with a land line or an internet connection for no additional cost. Also, this type of attack represents such a small percentage of total break-ins that the FBI does not even keep a count. This is because the majority of break-ins are a quick forced entry and not the sophisticated type of attack that requires diligent planning as well as highly illegal and cost-prohibitive equipment. Assuming an intruder has the requisite technology, he would need to know the frequency ranges he needs to jam, and also know the layout of your home beforehand, as he would have to avoid motion detectors even in the unlikely event that he bypassed a door sensor.

SimpliSafe isn't the only burglar alarm system to be recently called out as flawed. Last month, researchers from security firm Rapid7 reported that Comcast's home security system could be disarmed when intruders used commodity radio-jamming equipment to interfere with its internal communications.
