Daniel Horowitz posted this morning evidence showing Trump donated to Kamala Harris, the California AG known for her staunch advocacy of Sanctuary cities. He writes:
More recently, while conservatives were fighting the Gang of Eight amnesty bill and Obama’s sanctuary nation policies, Trump donated $6,000 to Kamala Harris, the California attorney general who is, perhaps, one of the most notorious supporters of sanctuary cities in the country. In 2014, his daughter, Ivanka, also cut a $2,000 check to the queen of sanctuary cities. That was after Harris championed the despicable Trust Act, which turned the entire state of California into a sanctuary for illegals. This Trust Act Horowitz refers to empowered local law enforcement officials in California to ignore federal immigration authorities:
In 2012, California Attorney General Kamala Harris said local law enforcement are not required to determine immigration status or enforce federal immigration laws. She also said civil immigration detainers — ICE requests to hold a suspect — are voluntary. The entire state also operates under the Trust Act, which allows illegal immigrants charged with minor crimes to be released after posting bail or serving time. Here’s the evidence Horowitz posted of Trump’s donations to Harris:
So while Trump was supposedly outraged over Kate Steinle’s death last year, the record shows he helped to reelect the woman who was in part responsible for the Sanctuary City crisis in Califorina that led to Steinle’s death.
Donald Trump says one thing with his tongue and something completely different with his wallet.

Trump donated to Bondi's reelection campaign.

Florida attorney general Pam Bondi has endorsed Donald Trump the day before the Sunshine State's Republican presidential primary. The Tampa Bay Times reports Bondi endorsed Trump at a rally Monday and called him "the most popular person in Florida, by far."
Bondi, who was first elected attorney general in 2010, was reelected in 2014 even as question arose about her mixing of politics and official duties. The most high-profile incident came in September 2013, when Bondi successfully persuaded Florida governor Rick Scott to delay the execution of a convicted murderer and rapist so it would not conflict with a fundraiser for her reelection campaign.
Another questionable act from Bondi shines a different light on Monday's Trump endorsement. Here was the Times back in October 2013:
Bondi apologized last month after she
persuaded Gov. Rick Scott to delay an execution so she could host a
fundraiser at her South Tampa home that ended up raising $140,000.
Now comes criticism of a $25,000 contribution made by one of Donald Trump's foundations to a political committee associated with Bondi. The donation came three days after an Attorney General's Office spokeswoman said Bondi was reviewing allegations in a lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general against get-rich-quick seminars associated with Trump….
A Sept. 14 Orlando Sentinel story noted that Schneiderman cited dozens of complaints filed with the Florida Attorney General's Office in 2008, two years before Bondi took office. A spokeswoman for Bondi was quoted as saying the office was reviewing the New York lawsuit.
Three days later, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, based in New York, made a $25,000 contribution to And Justice for All, a political fundraising committee raising money for Bondi's re-election.
Florida hasn't followed New York's lead against Trump. Bondi couldn't be reached for comment. Jenn Meale, a Bondi spokeswoman, suggested no action is necessary because the affected Florida consumers would be compensated if New York wins that case.
But a review of the 22 complaints filed in 2008 show they named the "Trump Institute," an entity not named in the New York suit. Because those are technically different entities, it's unclear how many making those complaints would be covered, then, by the New York suit.
Ultimately, Bondi's office did not end up joining the lawsuit or filing a separate one.Now comes criticism of a $25,000 contribution made by one of Donald Trump's foundations to a political committee associated with Bondi. Aonymous has declared "total war" on Donald Trump, threatening to shut down his websites and expose what he doesn't want the public to know.
In a new video, the hacktivist collective describes the US presidential candidate's actions and words as "deeply disturbing".
"Your inconsistent and hateful campaign has not only shocked the United States of America. You have shocked the entire planet with your appalling actions and ideas," a cloaked man in a Guy Fawkes mask says in a computerised English accent.
"You say what your current audience wants to hear but in reality you don't stand for anything except for your personal greed and power."
The video calls on "every able person with a computer" to join Anonymous ' war on Trump, known as #OpTrump, with the aim of dismantling his campaign and sabotaging his brand.
#OpTrump's first action will be to target trumpchicago.com - the official website of Trump Tower in Chicago - on April 1 (April Fool's Day).
"This is a call to arms. This is a call to the freedom fighters, to the forgotten, to the censored. To our fellow hacktivists throughout the world," the masked man says.
"This is a call to protect out future, our freedom and our very way of life. This is a call to you.
"This is not a warning," he concludes. "This is a declaration of total war. Operation Trump engaged. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We will not forget. Donald Trump , it is too late to expect us."
This is not the first time Donald Trump has been targeted by the group.
In December 2015, the hacktivist group attacked www.trumptowerny.com , after Trump demanded that Muslims should be banned from entering the United States.
"Donald Trump think twice before you speak anything," the group said in a video posted on YouTube. "You have been warned Mr. Donald Trump."

An Open Letter to Donald Trump:
Mr. Trump,
I try my hardest not to be political. I’ve refused to interview several of your fellow candidates. I didn’t want to risk any personal goodwill by appearing to take sides in a contentious election. I thought: ‘Maybe the timing is not right.’ But I realize now that there is no correct time to oppose violence and prejudice. The time is always now. Because along with millions of Americans, I’ve come to realize that opposing you is no longer a political decision. It is a moral one.
I’ve watched you retweet racist images. I’ve watched you retweet racist lies. I’ve watched you take 48 hours to disavow white supremacy. I’ve watched you joyfully encourage violence, and promise to ‘pay the legal fees’ of those who commit violence on your behalf. I’ve watched you advocate the use of torture and the murder of terrorists’ families. I’ve watched you gleefully tell stories of executing Muslims with bullets dipped in pig blood. I’ve watched you compare refugees to ‘snakes,’ and claim that ‘Islam hates us.’
I am a journalist, Mr. Trump. And over the last two years I have conducted extensive interviews with hundreds of Muslims, chosen at random, on the streets of Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan. I’ve also interviewed hundreds of Syrian and Iraqi refugees across seven different countries. And I can confirm— the hateful one is you.
Those of us who have been paying attention will not allow you to rebrand yourself. You are not a ‘unifier.’ You are not ‘presidential.’ You are not a ‘victim’ of the very anger that you’ve joyfully enflamed for months. You are a man who has encouraged prejudice and violence in the pursuit of personal power. And though your words will no doubt change over the next few months, you will always remain who you are.
Sincerely,
Brandon Stanton

DOJ: Trump’s Early Businesses Blocked Blacks
A 1973 suit against Trump and the Trump Organization claimed that superintendents at Trump properties would mark African American’s applications with a ‘C’ for ‘Colored’ and other racial codes.
When an
African American showed up to rent an apartment owned by a young
real-estate scion named Donald Trump and his family, the building
superintendent did what he claimed he’d been told to do. He allegedly
attached a separate sheet of paper to the application, marked with the
letter “C.”
“C” for “Colored.”
According to the Department of Justice, that was the crude code that ensured the rental would be denied.
Details
of this secret system, as well as other practices that the Trump
organization allegedly used to exclude black residents from its
buildings in Brooklyn, Queens, and Norfolk, Virginia, in the 1970s, were
recorded in a lawsuit brought by the DOJ against Trump and his father,
Fred, in 1973 for alleged violations of the Fair Housing Act.
The
Trumps responded to the Department of Justice with characteristic
combativeness. They counter-sued the federal government for $100
million, while the family’s infamous lawyer—the Joe McCarthy aide turned
mafia counsel Roy Cohn—attacked a prosecutor for being a “hot-tempered
white female” while slamming the investigation as “Gestapo-like.”
Extensive court documents, unearthed by The Daily Beast, provide a
window not only into alleged discriminatory practices at the heart of
Trump’s early real estate empire, but also into the family’s attack
mode, which echoes Trump’s current slash-and-burn campaign for the White
House.
A Secret Racist Code
The lawsuit—which Trump Management settled
in 1975 with a consent decree, and which they noted at the time did not
constitute an admission of wrongdoing—detailed numerous instances of a
racial code that Trump-owned buildings allegedly used to indicate if an
applicant was black or otherwise “undesirable.”
A
super who worked for the Trumps, Thomas Miranda, allegedly told the DOJ
that Trump Management staffers had instructed him to “attach a separate
sheet of paper to every application submitted by a prospective ‘colored’
renter.”
“Miranda
was to write a ‘C’ in order to indicate to management that the
prospective renter was ‘colored,’” the DOJ noted in court documents.
Elyse
Goldweber, an attorney on the case, claimed Miranda had been reluctant
to talk to her and have his name disclosed because “he was afraid that
the Trumps would have him ‘knocked off.’” Miranda was also allegedly
afraid to reveal to the Trumps that he was Puerto Rican and instead told
them he was South American because he thought they “did not want Puerto
Ricans living or working in the building,” according to Goldweber’s
documentation.
In
another instance, Goldweber said, Miranda told another tenant that
Trump’s central office did not want him to rent to an Indian man—and
that they only agreed to rent to the individual after they found out he
had United Nations connections and that a rejection “might cause an
unnecessary confrontation.”
Miranda
later denied in sworn testimony that he’d said such things to the DOJ.
He testified that he went to talk to the Trumps after prosecutors paid
him a visit and told “Mr. Trump,” who was a “busy man,” that he wanted
no part in the case.
But
according to other court documents from the suit, Thomas Miranda was
not the only staffer who claimed to know of a secret racial code.
According
to the DOJ, a former super at Trump’s Highlander complex claimed that
he would also attach a coded piece of paper to let the “central office”
know that an applicant was black. He added that a number of supers in
Queens used a “phony lease” to enable them to refuse apartments to
people of color. The super’s assistant backed up his story about the
code and said she was told, “Trump Management tries not to rent to black
persons.”
The
DOJ claimed that a former rental agent for the Trumps, Donald Herman,
said he was told “that Trump Management believes that Jewish tenants are
the best tenants” and while some black residents were allowed, it was
not preferred. Herman also said he knew of the code to identify black
applicants.
The
DOJ said that Allan Gross, another rental agent, claimed that he, too,
was aware of a code used “to designate which applicants were black or
otherwise ‘undesirable.’”
The
DOJ alleged that former staffer Harry Schefflin, who worked at Trump’s
Briarwick apartment complex in 1973, told government investigators that
he was personally ordered to rent only to “Jews and executives” and to
discourage blacks from renting. Schefflin said that Fred Trump and other
agents of the company would use a racial code to indicate when a renter
was black, marking the applications with a “No. 9.”
In
addition to the alleged code, the lawsuit claimed other Trump employees
had spoken of a host of nasty tactics to keep blacks from renting
apartments—from supers telling prospective black applicants that the
rental rates were substantially higher than they actually were, to
keeping “a sham lease and check to be shown to black applicants.”
One rental agent at Trump’s Tysens Park Apartments said that he’d been told by Fred Trump himself not to rent to blacks.
Fred,
he said, wished to “decrease the number of black tenants already
residing at Tysens Park by encouraging black tenants to locate housing
elsewhere.”
“No Vacancy” For Blacks
In
its lawsuit, the DOJ listed more than half a dozen cases in which a
black person would try to rent an apartment at a Trump-owned building
and would be denied; but when a white person—often a “tester” from New
York’s Urban League—would inquire about vacancies, they would allegedly
get offered an apartment in the same building.
Among the claims:
- According to the DOJ, Alfred Hoyt, a black man, was told there were no two-bedroom apartments at Trump’s Westminster apartment complex in Brooklyn. His white wife, Sheila, was offered a two-bedroom apartment the very next day. They were admitted to the building after filing a complaint with the New York City Human Rights Commission.
- The DOJ claimed that Henrietta Davis, a black woman, tried to rent an apartment at the Fontainebleau in Brooklyn in 1972. She said she was told by the super that he had no authority to accept rental applications. And yet when Muriel Salzman, a white Urban League tester, went to the Fontainebleau directly after Davis, she was told that two apartments were free and she could rent either of them.
- According to the DOJ, just a week later, in 1972, Godfrey Jacobs—a black tester for the Urban League—was told there were no vacancies at the Beachaven Apartments in Sheepshead Bay. Yet George Sim Johnston, a white tester, was offered a rental at that building on the very same day.
- The DOJ alleged that Muriel Silberberg, a black employee of the New York Human Rights Commission, says she was told by a man named Paul Ziselman on March 10, 1973, that there were no one-bedroom apartments available in Trump’s Beachaven complex. Ziselman, who identified himself to Silberberg as a rental agent, allegedly later told Phyllis Spiro, a white employee of the Urban League, that he “followed a racially discriminatory rental policy at the direction of his superiors” and that very few “colored” people lived there.
- According to government investigators, Beverly Best, a black woman, tried to rent at the Beachaven complex in December of 1972. She says she was told by phone that an apartment was available but when she showed up in person the next day to fill out an application, she was told there were no vacancies. She was only admitted to the building after she, too, filed a complaint with the New York City Human Rights Commission.
By
the summer of 1974, after a new lead attorney, Donna Goldstein, had
taken over the case, the government detailed a series of tests conducted
by the New York Urban League in which a black employee would try to
rent an apartment at a Trump property and would often be denied, while a
white employee was often allegedly granted the same apartment.
In
court documents, Goldstein alleged that she had talked to a super named
Peter Connan at the Trumps’ Westminster apartment complex. Connan said
he was advised that the Trump office staff wanted to know the race of
applicants, and that he’d overheard a Trump staffer tell another super
that he should have told a black applicant there were no vacancies.
Goldstein
also noted that a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Laitman, were allegedly
denied the opportunity to sublet their apartment in 1973 because the
subleasee was black.
The
Laitmans had written a letter to the Trumps in August 1973—which was
later introduced in court—claiming that a neighbor had complained that
“if the apartment were rented to a Negro she would break her lease and
encourage others in the building to do likewise” and stating their
belief that the building’s manager “refused to rent the apt to [the
potential subleasee] because he is Negro.”
“Racial prejudice,” they exhorted the Trumps, “should not be tolerated in your organization.”
The Trumps Hit Back
When
the DOJ filed the lawsuit on Oct. 15, 1973—which included explicit
reference to Donald Trump, the president of Trump Management—the Trumps
immediately cried foul.
On Oct. 16, Donald Trump denied all of the accusations to the press, saying to The New York Times that the charges were flatly “ridiculous.”
“We have never discriminated and we never would,” he said.
“There have been a number of local actions against us and we’ve won them all.”
On
Dec. 12, 1973, after the court had given the Trumps no fewer than three
extensions (beyond the initially allotted 20 days), the Trumps’ lawyer,
Roy Cohn, filed a motion to dismiss the case. Cohn also launched a
counterclaim against the U.S. seeking $100 million in damages.
On the same day, Donald Trump was quoted in the New York Post
saying that the prosecution was trying to force the Trumps to rent to
welfare recipients “who do not otherwise qualify for our apartments in
our buildings.”
This
now familiar Trump-style incendiary hyperbole had already surfaced
inside the courtroom. In an earlier affidavit, Cohn had claimed that the
real purpose of the DOJ’s lawsuit was to serve as a press release
“announcing the capitulation of the defendants and the substitution of
the Welfare Department for the management corporation.”
Meanwhile,
Donald Trump claimed in an affidavit that the government had only
informed him of the lawsuit via the press, and that he’d first heard
about the allegations against him on his car radio on the morning of
Oct. 15. Later that day, Trump claimed, he heard the same news of the
lawsuit on television and in The New York Times, where he was quoted.
“We
have always maintained the respect and admiration of not only our
tenants but the community as a whole,” Trump wrote in his affidavit at
the time. “Our organization has never discriminated and does not now
discriminate.”
The
DOJ lawyers sought to dismiss the Trumps’ counterclaim on Jan. 8, 1974,
with information indicating that Donald Trump had, in fact, been
specifically informed of the case before it was reported in the press.
In
its court documents, the DOJ noted that the suit had been filed at 10
a.m. on Oct. 15. Shortly thereafter, they said, departmental attorney
Judith Wolf called “defendant Donald Trump and advised that the suit had
been filed. This was accomplished no later than 10:30, well in advance
of dissemination of the news by the media.”
The
lawyers wrote that the press release was not issued until after the
case was filed. “Mr. Trump expressed no awareness of the suit when Miss
Wolf spoke to him.”
Cohn’s
counterclaim and motion to dismiss the case were formally denied on
Feb. 5, 1974. But he wasn’t done contesting the legitimacy of the suit.
In
May 1974, DOJ attorney Donna Goldstein was assigned to the case, taking
over from Elyse Goldweber. In July, Cohn tried to have Goldstein held
in contempt of court, claiming her work had turned the case “into a
Gestapo-like investigation.”
It
was classic Roy Cohn, living to infuriate. He called the Urban League
testers “undercover agents,” and compared the FBI to storm troopers.
Even before he took issue with Goldstein, Cohn had written a letter
(which was later submitted in court) to her predecessor, Elyse
Goldweber, in April of 1974, saying, “I never knew you were such a
hot-tempered white female.” It’s hard not to read the lawsuit and think
of such statements coming from the mouth of modern-day Donald Trump.
In
his attempt to take down Goldstein, Cohn presented at least four former
employees whom he said had been harassed by the DOJ. They included Paul
Ziselman, a clerk for the Trumps named Carol Falcone, and Thomas
Miranda, the superintendent who had initially claimed he’d been
instructed to mark the rental applications of African Americans with a
“C” for “Colored.” The employees claimed that Goldstein and the FBI had
visited them at odd hours and scared them with talk of “higher
authorities” and jail time for perjury. (Goldstein denied all the
allegations against her.)
On
July 26, Cohn filed the motion to have Goldstein held in contempt. On
Aug. 5, the United States denied any improper conduct from Goldstein.
The
magistrate who heard the case, Vincent Catoggio, dismissed Cohn’s
allegations against Goldstein and slammed Cohn for trying to smear the
FBI. (In one of the lawsuit’s most choice quotes, Cohn responded, “As
far as the FBI is concerned, nobody has been a better friend of the FBI
than I have.”)
In a hearing on Oct. 24, 1974, Catoggio said he “found no evidence in the record to sustain such a charge.”
“I think the charge is utterly without foundation,” he added. Brushed back, Cohn abandoned this line of attack.
Ongoing Discrimination?
At the time of the lawsuit, Donald Trump tried to distance himself from the alleged discriminatory practices.
Under oath in court during a March 1974 deposition, he was asked: “Do you ever have anything to do with rental decisions in individual cases?”
“No, I really don’t,” Trump responded.
But afterwards, Trump said in an interview
with a field investigator for the New York secretary of state—involving
an unrelated matter having to do with his brokerage license—that he
“supervise[d] and control[led] the renting of all apartments owned by
the Trump organization.”
“During
my interview with applicant he showed me hundreds of files,” the
investigator noted. “Each contained numerous leases both for commercial
and residential tenants... and rental records, all of which contained
applicant’s signature and handwriting.”
According to Wayne Barrett’s 1991 book, Trump: The Deals and The Downfall,
Trump was asked during his March 1974 deposition when the first black
resident moved in to one of his properties. He replied, “I don’t care
and I don’t know.”
Trump
also disclosed that his company had “a practice of destroying company
records to save space” and that he wasn’t sure if this practice had been
discontinued since the litigation began.
When
given the opportunity to respond about the allegations of a secret code
for black applicants, Cohn claimed in a February 1974 deposition, “We
would have no way in the world of knowing” about the race or religion of
applicants.
In 1975, Trump Management settled
the case with a consent decree. The Trumps agreed to take a list of
vacancies to the Urban League every week for two years. They also agreed
to let the League present one qualified candidate for every five
vacancies in buildings where less than 10 percent of residents were
black.
But
less than three years later, the DOJ and the Trumps were back in court
again, with the government charging that the real estate company wasn’t
complying with the agreed terms in the consent decree. In 1978, the DOJ charged
that “racially discriminatory conduct by Trump agents has occurred with
such frequency that it has created a substantial impediment to the full
enjoyment of equal opportunity.”
The
DOJ filed a motion for supplemental relief which entailed a
“substantial extension” of the consent decree, additional affirmative
action, and a requirement that Trump continue to report to the court and
the United States.
It is unclear if the Trump organization’s practices were significantly altered. But in 1983,
the Metropolitan Action Institute, a nonprofit fair-housing group,
released a report in which two Trump properties were specifically named
as being at least 95 percent majority white.
The
Fair Housing Act requires that employers be responsible for the actions
of their subordinates. In its 1973 suit, the DOJ charged that,
“stripped to its essentials, the claim of the United States is that the
defendants have failed and neglected to exercise their affirmative and
non-delegable duty under the Fair Housing Act to assure compliance by
their subordinates.”
The
Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment on this
article. But the ugly details of this early clash with the Department of
Justice shed light on alleged systemic discrimination at the heart of
the Trump real estate empire. If there is any truth to these
allegations, these court documents may provide insight into the early
business practices of the candidate who is now committed to blocking all
Muslims entry into our nation, and who claims to be “the least racist person on Earth.”

Trump’s Week of Errors, Exaggerations and Flat-out Falsehoods
POLITICO Magazine subjected the GOP front-runner to our fact-checking process. This is the result.
D onald Trump says he is a truthful man. “Maybe truthful to a fault,” he boasted last week at a North Carolina rally where one of his supporters sucker punched a protester.
But truthful he is not.
The result: more than five dozen statements deemed mischaracterizations, exaggerations, or simply false – the kind of stuff that would have been stripped from one of our stories, or made the whole thing worthy of the spike. It equates to roughly one misstatement every five minutes on average.
From warning of the death of Christianity in America to claiming that he is taking no money from donors, the Manhattan billionaire and reality-show celebrity said something far from truthful many times over to the thousands of people packed into his raucous rallies. His remarks represent an extraordinary mix of inaccurate claims about domestic and foreign policy and personal and professional boasts that rarely measure up when checked against primary sources.
Many were straight-up wrong, such as his claim that the United States has a “$500 billion a year trade deficit with China,” which has been debunked over and over by fact checkers, and his statement that he never settles lawsuits, when in fact he has.
In other instances, Trump stretches the limits of reality to distort the records of his rivals. Marco Rubio was a main target last week and saw Trump twist the truth about his immigration position to warn voters that the senator is “totally in favor of amnesty.”
Then there are the seemingly small falsehoods, piled one atop another. Trump misstates the timing of things – an omnibus spending bill, for example, was called “the craziest thing I’ve ever seen six weeks ago” when in fact it was a spending package passed in December. He exaggerates polls and rankings of other things – such as his position among Hispanics and how he performs in Wall Street Journal polls. He even claims ownership of a successful winery that denies any ownership tie to the GOP front-runner.
That Trump so frequently ventures so far from the truth perhaps shouldn’t surprise given how much of his campaign is unorthodox. Offensive barbs against Muslims, Mexicans, women and people with disabilities would have quickly sunk the fortunes of other White House candidates but they haven’t hurt the real estate mogul’s standing in the polls, or, more importantly, with Republican voters.
Certainly, many politicians stretch the truth – the practice of political fact-checking began long before the 2016 election cycle. But none so much as Trump. These untruths – strung together as they are in all of his speeches – have helped drive one of the most rapid ascents in modern presidential campaign history. Stephen Colbert once invented a word to define the political discourse of the time. “Truthiness,” the comedian declared on his debut episode in 2005, was the truth as felt in one’s heart and gut, not what was written up in reference books. A decade later, Trump has taken the idea and run (for president) with it.
The Trump campaign did not respond to attempts to get comment for this story or these individual instances of inaccuracies.
Here’s POLITICO’s run-down of a week in the life of a Donald Trump fact-check:
***
錯誤,誇張和單位出虛虛實實的特朗普的週
政治雜誌受到共和黨的領跑者給我們的事實查證過程。 這是結果。
“$500 billion a year trade deficit with China.” (March 7 rally in Concord, N.C., and at least four other times last week)
That’s overstating the case by $134 billion. The imbalance peaked at $366 billion in 2015.
“You have Japan, where the cars come in by the hundreds of thousands, they pour off the boats. ... [W]e send them like nothing. We send them nothing, by comparison, nothing.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C. and at least one other time)
The United States exported $62 billion worth of goods to Japan last year.
“We have a trade deficit with Japan of over $100 billion a year.” (March 8 victory press conference in Jupiter, Fla. and at least one other time)
The trade deficit with Japan in 2015 was about $69 billion.
“We’re losing our jobs and the politicians don’t tell you that.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
Politicians from both parties rail against unemployment and outsourcing. For example, the Obama White House in 2012 put out a fact sheet with “outsourcing” in the title.
“We don’t win at trade. We lose to everybody at trade. Trade we lose to everybody.” (March 11 in St. Louis)
In 2015, the U.S. had trade surpluses with a number of countries including Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the UAE and Australia.
“Remember we used to have Made in the USA, right? When was the last time you’ve seen it? You don’t see that anymore. You don’t see that anymore.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
The U.S. Economics and Statistics Administration authored a report called “What Is Made In America?” in 2014 that found that U.S. manufacturers sold $4.4 trillion of goods that classify as “Made in the U.S.A.” Manufacturing contributes $2.17 trillion to the U.S. economy and employs 12.33 million Americans.
“We have lousy health-care, where it’s going up 35, 45, 55 percent.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
Premiums rose by an average of 5.8 percent a year since Obama took office, compared to 13.2 percent in the nine years prior, Politifact found in October.
“If you look at the jobs reports, which are totally phony, because if you stop looking for a job you are essentially considered employed.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
In the way the unemployment rate is calculated, discouraged workers who give up on looking for a job leave the workforce so they don’t count toward unemployment, but they don’t count as employed either.
“I know there are some companies where the people were full time for 25 years. Now they’re part-timers and they go out and get another job, and that has to do solely with Obamacare.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C. and at least one other time)
There are many reasons Americans tend to change jobs more often and work on a part-time basis more than they used to, and the trend predates Obamacare.
***
“LIKE SWISS CHEESE”: IMMIGRATION“The migration, they’re coming across. Obama wants to bring thousands and thousands of people in. He has no idea who they are.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C. and at least one other time)
No one has suggested accepting refugees without screening them for security, a process that refugee advocates currently call daunting and far too time consuming.
About Rubio: “He’s totally in favor of amnesty.” (March 9 in Fayetteville, N.C.)
Rubio opposed amnesty while running for Senate but, in an effort to draft compromise legislation, co-sponsored a bill that included a path to citizenship. That’s not the same as blanket amnesty, he said in the Jan. 28 debate.
“Really they’ve shut Christianity down.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
Seven in 10 Americans identify as Christian, according to Pew.
***
“SELF-FUNDING”: CAMPAIGN FINANCE“I’ve spent the least money and I’m by far number 1. So I’ve spent the least.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
As of Jan. 31, Trump’s campaign had spent $23.9 million, more than John Kasich’s campaign, which has spent $7.2 million, or $19.5 million if you include outside groups supporting him.
“I’m self-funding my campaign.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C., and at least two other times)
“I’m not taking money. ... I’m not taking. I spent a lot of money. I don’t take.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
“I’m not going to take any money. I don’t want any money. ... You know, I’ve self-funded my campaign. ... Right now, I’m into, you would know better than me, maybe $30 million, maybe more.” (March 11 press conference in Palm Beach)
There’s a big blue “DONATE” button in the top right corner of his campaign website. As of Jan. 31, his campaign had accepted $7.5 million from donors not named Donald J. Trump. Trump gave his campaign only $250,318. He lent another $17.5 million, but that’s repayable at any time until shortly after the election.
“I’m already in for $30 million cash.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
Not unless he’s made a lot more contributions since Jan. 31. As of then he had only contributed $250,318, plus the loan of $17.5 million.
“I think I have $50 million of negative ads against me in Florida. $50 million. Somebody said $50 million.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
As of last Friday, outside groups had spent $15 million in Florida.
“So many horrible, horrible things said about me in one week. $38 million worth of horrible lies.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Every Republican dollar not spent by Trump on TV and radio from March 1 through 7 comes to $10.57 million, according to The Tracking Firm, a service that monitors media buys. And not all of that money was negative against Trump.
“How many times do you think Marco and Ted and all of them were calling their super PAC? Is that right? It’s called life. ... They talk to their super PAC. They’re not supposed to but that’s the way life works.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Trump provided no evidence that Rubio and Cruz talk to their super PACs. Candidates coordinating with super PACs is against the law; Trump has not filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission.
“In New Hampshire, as an example, I spent $1.5 million and somebody else spent $48 million. I was one, the other person was number five.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Trump actually spent $3.1 million in New Hampshire, not $1.5 million, according to Politifact. The Bush campaign and super PAC actually spent $36 million in the state, not $48 million. Bush also came in fourth in New Hampshire, not fifth.
“Countries have lobbyists also. They have lobbyists. They have their donors.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
Foreign countries can and do hire representatives in Washington, registered under the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act. But foreign nationals are not allowed to contribute to political campaigns.
***
“NASTY GUY”: ATTACKING HIS RIVALS“I have not even focused on Hillary yet. ... I haven’t even started with her other than four weeks ago.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Months ago, in December, Trump said Clinton’s bathroom break during a Democratic debate was “disgusting” and Barack Obama “schlonged” her in the 2008 primaries.
“Little Marco Rubio. You know, he’s a no-show in the U.S. Senate. He never goes to vote.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
Rubio missed 229 of 1,517 votes between January 2011 and March 2016, according to GovTrack.us. That’s 15 percent. The median record for missed votes for senators currently serving is 1.7 percent.
“Wasn’t that funny last night when Cruz said, ‘I’m the only one that can beat Donald Trump. I have demonstrated that I can beat him. I won five states.’” (March 11 in St. Louis)
Cruz correctly stated he won eight states, not five, according to the debate transcript.
“Ohio got lucky because they struck oil. And the budget of Ohio went up more than any budget in the entire United States. Higher than any budget.” (March 11 press conference in Palm Beach)
Ohio’s budget increased from $55.9 billion in 2010 to $64 billion in 2015. North Dakota’s increased more in percentage terms, and New York’s in dollar terms, according to data from the National Association of State Budget Officers.
***
“EVERYBODY LIKES ME”: POLLS“One of the polls just came out, and a number of them have just come out. I’m beating Hillary Clinton quite easily, thank you.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C. and at least one other time)
Trump is likely referring to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll from mid-February, which showed him two points ahead of Clinton. A clear majority of other polls show she would beat him.
“After Paris, all of a sudden it started changing. We started getting polls in. And everybody liked Trump from the standpoint of ISIS, from the standpoint of the military.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C. and at least one other time)
After the Paris attacks, fewer than half (42 percent) of GOP respondents in a Washington Post-ABC poll said Trump was the best candidate to best handle the threat of terrorism.
“They do a poll in South Carolina, [Lindsey Graham] endorses somebody else and the poll in South Carolina has me at 47.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Trump never topped 42 percent in all the polls collected by Real Clear Politics and won the state with 32.5 percent of the vote.
“Upstate New York I poll higher than anybody ever.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Hillary Clinton would beat Trump 56 percent to 33 percent in upstate New York, according to a recent Siena College poll. The same poll found that the only region in New York he would win is by 5 points in the state’s suburban areas.
“They [the WSJ/NBC poll] had me practically dying in South Carolina the day before. ... And it looked like I was really in trouble and then I won in a landslide. The poll was wrong.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
The last South Carolina NBC/WSJ poll had Trump at 28 percent versus Cruz at 23 percent. A national WSJ/NBC poll around the same time had Cruz ahead of Trump 28 percent to 26 percent.
“Then all of a sudden they [WSJ/NBC] come up with this poll that was very close. They put it on the front-page of the Wall Street Journal, front-page. They never do that. ... I never do well in the Wall Street Journal polls; it’s set against me.” (March 11 in St. Louis)
The Journal routinely covers polls on its front page, and Trump does well in many of them. For example, a headline from mid-January reads: “Poll: Donald Trump Widens His Lead in Republican Presidential Race”.
“We’re winning every poll with the Hispanics.” (March 9 in Fayetteville, N.C.)
A Washington Post-Univision poll in February found that 8 in 10 registered Hispanic voters viewed Trump unfavorably.
***
“NOBODY IS GOING TO MESS WITH US”: SECURITY“We have tremendous problems with crime and other things.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
Crime rates have declined dramatically since the 1990s and remain at historically low levels.
“If you look at the Iran deal, where we give a terror nation $150 billion” and “got nothing”. (March 11 in St. Louis and March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
Credible estimates vary for the value of sanctions relief to Iran, topping out at $100 billion. But it’s false to suggest the U.S. gains nothing from the deal. Iran agreed to ship uranium out of the country, dismantle two-thirds of its centrifuges and accept rigorous inspections.
“The Gulf states aren’t spending. The Gulf states have so much money, they’re not spending anything. By the way, they’re not taking anybody, they’re not taking, they’re not spending.” (March 7 rally in Madison, Miss.)
At a February London aid conference, Gulf states pledged at least $537 million to help mitigate the Syrian crisis, and the United Arab Emirates has accepted more than 100,000 Syrian nationals since the civil war began in 2011.
ISIS drowns “people in these massive steel cages where 40, 50, 60 people they dump it and they pull it up half an hour later with 50 people dead.” (March 9 in Fayetteville, N.C.)
Last June, ISIS released video of the group drowning five Iraqis in a cage. There are no reports of 40 to 60 victims.
“Eight weeks ago, they signed a budget that is so bad. It funds ISIS.” (March 9 in Fayetteville, N.C.)
The omnibus spending bill, passed in December, is not strictly a budget, and it’s not clear what part of it Trump thinks gives money to ISIS. The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for a reference on this specific claim.

“BIGGEST,” “BEST,” “MOST BEAUTIFUL”: PERSONAL BOASTS“It turned out I’m much richer than people think.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss.)
Trump says he’s worth more than $10 billion. Forbes Magazine says he’s worth $4.5 billion. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimated his net worth at $2.9 billion.
“By the way, four times on the cover of Time Magazine over the last number of months. ... I think I was on the cover of Time twice over 30 years and now I think I’ve been almost, I think it’s four times in the last three or four months.” (March 7 in Concord, N.C.)
“It is a movement. It’s been covered on Time magazine covers many many times.” (March 11 in St. Louis)
Trump has been on the cover of Time three times since he started running for president nine months ago, not four times over the last three or four months. Before his presidential run, he was on the cover just once, in 1989, not twice. In the last four months, he’s been on the cover twice, not three times.
“I built an unbelievable, some of the greatest assets in the world, very little debt, tremendous cash flow, tremendous. ... Almost all of my businesses work.” (March 7 in Madison, Miss. and at least one other time)
Four of Trump’s companies have declared bankruptcy, meaning they could not repay their debts. For example, the Trump Plaza Hotel declared bankruptcy in 1992 with $550 million in debt. The Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts filed for bankruptcy in 2004 carrying an estimated $1.8 billion in debt. In December 2008, Trump Entertainment Resorts couldn’t pay a $53.1 million interest payment for a bond.
“I don’t settle lawsuits. ... I don’t do it.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
In 2013, Trump settled with condo buyers who had sued over a project in Baja California.
“It’s the largest winery on the East Coast. I own it 100 percent. No mortgage. No debt. You can all check. You have to go check the records, folks. In fact, the press, I’m asking you, please check.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
Trump Winery in Charlottesville is not the largest vineyard or winery on the East Coast, according to the National Association of American Wineries.
“We make the finest wine. As good a wine as you can get anywhere in the world.” (March 8 in Jupiter, Fla.)
None of the wines from Trump Winery made the top 100 list of the best wines in 2015 as ranked by Wine Spectator Magazine. Looking at just Virginia wines, none of Trump’s wines were finalists in the flagship 2016 Governors’ Cup.
“I’ve been hearing from virtually everybody in the Republican Party and they’re congratulating me and they’re saying, we’re going to get together.” (March 11 in Palm Beach)
There are many Republicans who are not engaging with Trump or congratulating him.
***
“ABSOLUTE SLEAZE”: THE PRESS“The only way, now everybody’s talking about how massive these crowds are, the only way they find out about the crowds, the only way is with the protestors.” (March 9 in Fayetteville, N.C.)
The press has long noted the size of Trump’s audiences with or without protestors. For example, last August, CNN covered Trump’s crowd of 30,000 at an Alabama football stadium.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2016/03/16/donald-trump-just-threatened-more-violence-only-this-time-its-directed-at-the-gop/?postshare=4891458156594159&tid=ss_twDonald Trump just threatened more violence. Only this time, it’s directed at the GOP.
THE MORNING PLUM:
Donald Trump romped to victory last night in Florida (effortlessly swatting Marco Rubio out of the race), North Carolina, and Illinois, and the resulting delegate count now means that Trump has a very plausible route to winning an outright majority of the delegates, securing the nomination. However, this is far from assured, and Trump’s latest vault forward has only intensified conversations among Republicans about how to stop him at a contested convention.
But no sooner had this chatter started, then Trump dropped another bomb, by suggesting this morning on CNN that if he finishes with the most delegates, and the nomination goes to someone else, that violence could result:
Trump said Wednesday that a contested GOP convention could be a disaster if he goes to Cleveland a few delegates shy of 1,237 — and doesn’t leave as the party’s nominee. It’s hard to say whether this is intended as a threat or a prediction. But the unsettling fact of the matter is that there is no particular reason to rule out the former — that it was indeed intended as a tacit threat, as least of a certain kind. Trump has been playing a clever little game where he hints at the possibility of violence while stopping short of explicitly threatening it — yet he also doesn’t denounce such an outcome as unacceptable, so his hints effectively function as a threat. And as Philip Klein detailed the other day, this could well emerge as an aspect of his convention strategy:
“I think you’d have riots,” Trump said on CNN.
Noting that he’s “representing many millions of people,” he told Chris Cuomo: “If you disenfranchise those people, and you say, ‘I’m sorry, you’re 100 votes short’…I think you’d have problems like you’ve never seen before. I think bad things would happen.”
Political commentators now routinely talk about the riots that would break out in Cleveland if Trump were denied the nomination, about how his supporters have guns and all hell could break loose, that they would burn everything to the ground. It works to Trump’s advantage to not try too hard to dispel these notions. He wants Republican delegates who control his political fate to have it in the back of their minds…Now Trump has made this explicit. Three more points about this. First, it comes right after Mitch McConnell made a very public show of the fact that he privately told Trump that it might be a good idea to “condemn” and “discourage” the idea of violence at his rallies. Trump basically just gave McConnell — and other GOP leaders who surely feel the same way — a big, fat middle finger.
Second, whether or not Trump intended to threaten violence, his latest comments are very significant in another way. Trump explicitly said that if he goes into the convention just shy of a majority of delegates, it would be “disenfranchising” to his voters if the delegates award the nomination to someone else in later balloting. As I’ve reported, some Republicans already worry that if more than one alternative to Trump stays in, it could work against the plot to stop Trump. It could mean the runner-up finishes farther behind Trump in delegates — which end up getting divided between Ted Cruz and John Kasich — thus making it harder to justify giving the nomination to someone else. Trump is essentially saying that if this were to happen, then — violence or not — he will do everything in his power to cast a contested convention as illegitimate, discouraging his supporters not to back the nominee and otherwise doing as much damage to the GOP as he possibly can.
And third, threats like like this could only make it harder for Senate Republicans to continue to refuse to act on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee. Their implicit position is that President Trump should get to pick that nominee instead, if he wins the general election, a stance that will grow increasingly untenable as Trump looks more and more likely to win the nomination, and simultaneously looks more and more crazy and reckless. But that brings us to our next item.
**************************************************************
* OBAMA TO ANNOUNCE HIS SUPREME COURT NOMINEE: Reuters reports:
Obama will announce his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court at 11 am E.T. on Wednesday, a source familiar with the selection process told Reuters….Obama is likely to announce either Judge Sri Srinivasan or Merrick Garland as his choice, the source told Reuters. As I’ve argued, the combination of Trump tightening his grip on the nomination and Obama rolling out an actual nominee could make Senate GOP inaction harder to sustain. Update: It’s reportedly Garland.
* TRUMP TIGHTENS GRIP ON NOMINATION: NBC News’s First Read crew crunches the numbers and concludes that Trump finished last night with 656 of the 1,237 that he needs to win the nomination outright, to 408 to runner-up Ted Cruz. The path ahead:
Trump needs to win 55% of remaining delegates (including 60 left from last night)…Cruz needs to win 79% of remaining delegates…Kasich needs to win 104% of the remaining delegates. So it’s still very possible to force a contested convention, but Kasich and Cruz both staying in could split the non-Trump vote in the remaining states, which could make that less likely.
* CLINTON’S PATH TO NOMINATION CLOSE TO ASSURED: Clinton racked up victories in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, and Illinois, ending the night with a pledged delegate lead of around 300. Nate Cohn explains how daunting the road has become for Bernie Sanders:
In other words, it isn’t enough for Sanders to rack up a string of victories from here on out; they would have to be very big victories that average out to a double digit advantage. That seems unlikely.About half of all of the pledged delegates to the Democratic convention have been awarded. To prevail, Mr. Sanders will need to win from here till the finish by a 15-point margin….The next month includes numerous favorable contests: Utah, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Wyoming and Wisconsin. But Mr. Sanders is unlikely to win by such huge margins in the delegate-rich, affluent and diverse states along the coasts like California, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. There he needs big wins to counter Mrs. Clinton’s commanding delegate lead.
* BUT SANDERS TEAM STILL PLOTS LONG-SHOT VICTORY: Despite falling way behind in the pledged delegate and superdelegate count, Politico reports that the Sanders camp still sees a way to the nomination, one that turns on using momentum in coming states to flip superdelegates:
Sanders’ campaign thinks the next few weeks of the campaign calendar favor him and is preparing plans to make the uphill case to the super-delegates — the 718 activists and elected officials who can vote however they please — that his late-breaking momentum would make him a stronger nominee that they should support over Clinton….Sanders campaign aides say they’ll be able to keep Clinton from reaching the 2,383 delegate magic number she’d need to clinch the nomination at the convention and, by being close enough, convince the superdelegates to switch.Even if Sanders did manage to win a lot more contests down the road, it seems highly unlikely that a lot of superdelegates would switch to Sanders on the theory that he is more electable than Clinton is, but one supposes anything is possible.
* SANDERS PLEDGES TO GO ALL THE WAY TO CONVENTION: Just in from Senator Sanders this morning:
“I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her victories on Tuesday. I also want to thank the millions of voters across the nation who supported our campaign and elected delegates who will take us all the way to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. With more than half the delegates yet to be chosen and a calendar that favors us in the weeks and months to come, we remain confident that our campaign is on a path to win the nomination.”I don’t know if Sanders is actually confident of that or not. But he has the money to keep going, and he has every incentive to do so, since he can continue to build his movement and in the process, maximize his leverage later.
* GOP BRACES FOR BRUTAL CONVENTION BATTLE: The Washington Examiner reports that the question of whether a contested convention can nominate someone other than Trump turns on whether the rules committee rewrites convention rules to make it possible:
Without a presumptive nominee to oversee the process, delegates on the panel would be the subject of intense lobbying by the campaigns to craft regulations governing the convention that might undermine their competitors in the floor vote….The rules committee is comprised of convention delegates, who are themselves elected….The Cruz, Kasich and Trump campaigns have formed teams to work on electing delegates that will support their candidate on the convention floor. So Trump might successfully get some of his people on to the committee. You can be certain that this is going to be an epic, rolling, carnivalesque mess.
* WILL PAUL RYAN SEEK GOP NOMINATION? In an interview with John Harwood, Paul Ryan says:
“People say, ‘What about the contested convention?’ I say, well, there are a lot of people running for president. We’ll see. Who knows.”Of course, Ryan has a pretty good day job right now that he might not want to give up. Indeed, his spokesperson, AshLee Strong, quickly clarified that Ryan also said in that interview: “I’m happy where I am, so, No.” However, he said something similar about running for Speaker…

Trump campaign manager's behavior prompted staff concerns
Corey Lewandowski's temperament and inappropriate comments drew ire at his previous job, too.
Donald Trump’s staff and advisers have expressed concerns about campaign manager Corey Lewandowski’s quick temper and heavy-handed leadership, and some even planned a coup against him last month, sources involved in the discussions told POLITICO.
A series of presidential primary victories ended the talk of deposing Lewandowski, the sources said. But now, Trump is facing external pressure to fire Lewandowski after he was accused last week of manhandling a reporter.
But a POLITICO investigation reveals that the incident was far from the first time in Lewandowski’s political career ― or even during the 2016 campaign ― that the intense, Red Bull-chugging operative has been accused of bullying and other inappropriate behavior.
In interviews with more than 20 sources who have dealt with Lewandowski during his nearly year-long tenure with the Trump campaign and in his previous job with the Koch brothers-backed advocacy group Americans for Prosperity, complaints emerged about Lewandowski being rough with reporters and sexually suggestive with female journalists, while profanely berating conservative officials and co-workers he deemed to be challenging his authority.
Lewandowski is coming under scrutiny at a particularly inopportune time for a campaign struggling to respond to allegations that its candidate’s divisive rhetoric is stoking violent impulses among supporters and protestors. Taken together, the controversies seem to represent the most serious existential threat to an expectation-defying candidacy that has survived all manner of self-inflicted set-backs that might have crippled more conventional campaigns.
Longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone predicted that the persistent questions about Lewandowski’s behavior during last week’s incident, which involved the former Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields, could trip up Trump in a way that the real estate showman’s own bombast has yet to do.
“I am concerned that the controversy will hurt Donald,” said Stone, who quit the campaign last year citing the candidate’s lewd attacks against another female journalist, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.
Multiple insiders say they detected Lewandowski’s fingerprints on the departures of Stone and another longtime Trump official, Sam Nunberg, asserting that Lewandowski seeks to shield Trump from receiving other advice.
That instinct concerns some in Trump’s inner circle who contend that Lewandowski is out of his depth when it comes to political strategy and should bring in more experienced advisers, according to sources close to the Trump campaign and family.
But others close to Trump expressed doubt that he would yield to concerns about his campaign manager, who has helped the candidate go from laughingstock to the precipice of the Republican presidential nomination. Along the way, Lewandowski earned Trump’s trust, according to the sources, who say that’s something Trump does not grant, or withdraw, quickly.
Lewandowski, a father of four, grew up playing pond hockey in the hardscrabble mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, earning a degree from the city’s branch of the University of Massachusetts, followed by a masters from American University in Washington, where he worked in Republican congressional offices and campaigns.
His last campaign management experience before Trump was an utter failure ― he ran former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith’s reelection bid in 2002, when he became the first sitting senator in either party to lose a primary campaign in a decade. After taking a break from professional politics to work as a New Hampshire state police officer, Lewandowski, who sports a buzz cut, hooked up with the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity, which prides itself on being independent from the Republican establishment in Washington. Now, the fast-talking Lewandowski boasts to associates, he’s in line to be White House chief of staff in a Trump administration, according to one person close to the campaign.
In an email containing mostly one-word answers to POLITICO’s questions, Lewandowski said he welcomes dissenting strategic viewpoints and described his relationship with the Trump family as “solid.”
Lewandowski mostly declined to discuss his employment with Americans for Prosperity, which is known for requiring strict non-disclosure agreements.
But half-a-dozen sources familiar with his tumultuous tenure at the group, known as AFP, said it now seems instructive as an instance in which his interpersonal style was seen as undermining his effectiveness as a manager.
AFP is the ground force for the increasingly powerful advocacy network helmed by the billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch. In 2014, the group had a $104 million budget and a staff of 950 staffers spread across more than 30 states.
During his first five and a half years with AFP, Lewandowski rose from the director of the group’s New Hampshire chapter to its East Coast regional director, overseeing about 10 states, despite several fiery confrontations with other officials at the group.
“Corey was kind of a cowboy, and he was fun,” recalled someone who worked with him at the AFP. “He gave AFP a cool factor that we didn’t have, but there were some cultural problems.”
Lewandowski boasted about threatening to “blow up” the car of the organization’s chief financial officer over a late expense reimbursement check during the 2012 election cycle, according to multiple sources who are familiar with his claim. (Lewandowski in an email denied this account.)
But some of his most fiery clashes came with a female official who ran one of the states under Lewandowski’s control. The relationship ― and patience for Lewandowski within AFP ― reached a tipping point in October 2013. On the sidelines of a meeting of the group’s board in Manhattan, Lewandowski loudly berated the employee for challenging his authority, getting in her personal space and calling her a “c---” in front of a group of AFP employees, including some senior officials, according to three sources who either witnessed the exchange or dealt with its aftermath.
An AFP spokesman declined to comment on the incident in Manhattan or Lewandowski’s tenure, citing the organization’s personnel policies. And the female employee, whom POLITICO is not naming, also declined to comment, though she told multiple associates that she found Lewandowski’s behavior “very demeaning and insulting," as one put it.
Not long after the Manhattan incident, Lewandowski was shifted into a newly created role at AFP running a voter registration drive where most of his interactions were with vendors, according to the sources. But the effort drew unwanted attention when it sent incorrect voter registration forms to North Carolina residents, and ultimately it was judged not to justify the costs. It was shut down after the 2014 election, according to sources familiar with AFP and Lewandowski’s tenure. They said it became increasingly clear that Lewandowski didn’t have much of a future with the group.
Lewandowski wouldn’t comment on the altercation in Manhattan, but he suggested he wasn’t forced out of AFP. “I took a job with Mr. Trump,” he told POLITICO when asked why he left the group.
The two men had met backstage at a 2014 AFP event in Concord, New Hampshire. And when Trump started openly exploring a run, operatives with top-tier campaign experience weren’t exactly lining up to work for him. Lewandowski won over the brash billionaire by declaring that he was better and harder working than any other prospective campaign manager.
Trump offered Lewandowski a salary of $20,000 a month and provided him with at least temporary quarters in a Trump-owned Upper East Side apartment near the campaign’s headquarters, according to a source with direct knowledge of the arrangement. Lewandowski built a small campaign team, among whom he quickly developed a reputation for using profanity, controlling access to the candidate and loudly chastising staff who he perceived to be challenging his authority.
A group of current and former high-ranking members of the campaign last month planned to deliver Trump a letter outlining concerns with Lewandowski’s management, according to multiple sources familiar with the planned mutiny. Complicating matters, the businessman is not directly reachable by email and frequently has Lewandowski at his side. So the plan was to deliver the letter in an envelope to Trump’s head of security, Keith Schiller, in the days between the South Carolina primary and the Nevada caucuses, with instructions to give it to Trump and no one else.
But after Trump won big in South Carolina and even bigger in Nevada, the dissenters tabled their plan, believing that Trump would not change course as long as he was having success.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski’s temper increasingly has manifested itself in clashes beyond the campaign staff.
Sources tell POLITICO that Lewandowski unleashed a profanity-laced tirade towards the officials who organized this month’s Conservative Political Action Conference after they insisted that Trump ― like his presidential rivals ― field questions from a journalist of CPAC’s choosing after delivering his speech. The officials refused to yield, and the Trump campaign canceled his appearance entirely, though Lewandowski said the last-minute change of plans had nothing to do with the dispute.
And, separate from the incident with the Breitbart reporter Fields, other reporters who have covered the Trump campaign described instances in which Lewandowski was rough with journalists, using his body to push reporters away from the candidate. They described the former New Hampshire police officer as occasionally acting more like a security guard than a political operative.
“He can get really hot headed at times,” said a reporter who has covered the campaign and interacted with Lewandowski throughout the cycle.
Additionally, reporters told POLITICO that Lewandowski has made sexually suggestive and at times vulgar comments to ― and about ― female journalists who have covered Trump’s presidential bid. One reporter who was on the receiving end of such comments described them as “completely inappropriate in a professional setting.”
Lewandowski said in an email that he’d never behaved inappropriately with female journalists.
While those incidents had not been revealed before now, Lewandowski and his campaign have been publicly called out by the media and rivals for trying to intimidate journalists and flouting accepted terms of engagement between campaigns and the press. Fox News accused Lewandowski of making threats related to its anchor Kelly, and of violating the rules at a debate by consulting with Trump and refusing to leave the stage during a commercial break.
The National Press Club issued a statement on Monday raising concerns "about the increasing attacks and threats against journalists covering the United States presidential campaign, particularly after multiple unsettling reports from Donald Trump events." Breitbart News called on Lewandowski to apologize for the incident involving Fields. She has since filed a complaint against Lewandowski with the Jupiter, Fla. police department, and also has resigned from Breitbart in protest of what she contended was the news outlet's failure to sufficiently stand by her.
Trump rival Marco Rubio on Monday proclaimed "If my campaign manager had done that, my campaign would be over. He would have had to resign, and my campaign may be over."
Lewandowski instead has denied that he grabbed Fields and dismissed her on Twitter as “an attention seeker.”

NEW LOW… AGAIN
03.11.16 12:40 AM ET
No, Trump, Islam Doesn’t Hate America
The
Donald told CNN that Islam hates America. Like the Muslims who fight
and die for, and otherwise serve, this country? Outrageous.
Donald
Trump took his anti-Muslim jihad to a new, bone-chilling level on
Wednesday night. That’s when he declared to CNN’s Anderson Cooper that “Islam hates us.”
Trump is wrong, but let me blunt. I hate Trump. Not because he
demonizes Muslims, but because he’s a threat to our nation’s soul.
If
Trump truly thinks “Islam hates us,” then he should tell that to the
families of Muslim Americans who have died for our country. I doubt
Trump has the balls to tell the family of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan,
who received the Purple Heart and is buried in Arlington National
Cemetery after being killed in Iraq in 2004. And let’s see Trump tell
that to the family of Corp. Kareem Khan, who also received the Purple
Heart and is buried in Arlington after giving his life in 2007 in
defense of our nation.
Does
Trump even have the courage to tell the Muslims who have volunteered to
serve our nation, including my cousin who served in the U.S. Marines,
that they hate America? In fact, almost 6,000 Muslims are currently
serving in our armed forces fighting to ensure that all Americans—not
just ones of certain faiths—have the same rights.
Will
Trump tell the Muslims serving in our Congress, Keith Ellison and Andre
Carson, that they hate America? Will he say that to the thousands of
Muslims serving as police officers, paramedics, judges, schoolteachers,
and others in professions designed to help the people of our nation?
Nah,
Trump won’t ever do that because bullies are cowards. But what Trump
despicably did during his interview on CNN was to paint all Muslims as
potential threats to our country. “It’s very hard to define” and “very
hard to separate” the good from the bad Muslims, “because you don’t know
who’s who,” Trump stated.
I
want you to think about what Trump is saying here. The GOP frontrunner
is telling Americans to fear every single Muslim because any one of them
might be plotting to kill you and your family. If you believe Trump’s
words, what’s the next likely step? Trump has already proposed policies
to discriminate against Muslim Americans, which polls show his
supporters overwhelmingly support. What could be in store next for
American Muslims?
Maybe because I recently read an article saying that Trump, according to his ex-wife, kept by his bedside a book of Hitler’s speeches
that the Fuhrer gave during his ascent to power, I couldn’t help but
wonder, What did Jews living in Germany when Hitler first sought office
think? Did they dismiss his extreme rhetoric as nothing more than
political talk to get the support of people? Or were they frightened,
like many Muslim Americans are today?
To
be clear, I’m am in no way saying that if he became president, Trump
would be like Hitler, seizing emergency powers and worse. But perhaps we
need to pause as a nation when Anne Frank’s stepsister, Eva Schloss, an
Auschwitz survivor, warned us in January that Trump “is acting like
another Hitler by inciting racism.”
But
Trump’s hate has not just been about Muslims. His campaign from Day One
can best be best summed up as putting minorities back in their place.
That’s why we have seen white supremacists flock to Trump’s side. For
example, the vile white supremacist leader Jared Taylor, a man who
publicly endorsed Trump and has made robocalls on Trump’s’ behalf, wrote
a few months ago: “Donald Trump may be the last hope for a president who would be good for white people.”
And
Trump has given these hatemongers exactly what they have been dreaming
of for years. He has stirred up hate versus Latinos, implying that they
were coming to rape your wives and daughters. He has defended his white
supporters in November beating up a Black Lives Matter protester and
calling the man a “monkey” and the n-word. And we just saw Trump refuse to denounce the support of former Klan leader David Duke.
But
let’s return to Trump’s comment that Islam hates us. Are there a
fraction of Muslims who hate our nation? No doubt. Is that because of
Islam, a religion that came into being over a thousand years before
America was founded? The counter-terrorism experts I have spoken to have
made it clear that the anger directed against our nation is generally
grounded in foreign policy grievances or personal issues such as wanting
to join an organization that makes them feel a sense of self worth. But
there are a fraction of radical religious leaders who will try to teach
younger Muslims that somehow America is a religious-based enemy. We
must be united to countering their hateful message, not divided along
religious lines as ISIS hopes we become.
Perhaps
Trump is simply making the remarks about Muslims now because the GOP
race is tightening and he knows bashing Muslims plays well with the GOP
base. Trump noted as much after Ben Carson stated in October that no
Muslim should be president of the United States, and he got a big boost
in the polls. Trump then remarked, Carson’s “been getting a lot of ink on the Muslims… I guess people look at that and they probably like it.” Within weeks Trump began first using Muslims as a scapegoat.
Or
perhaps Trump’s info comes from Frank Gaffney, whose poll Trump read
from on the campaign trail about alleged hatred of Muslims. Gaffney is a
discredited figure whom the Southern Poverty Law Center recently listed
as the leader of an Anti-Muslim group.
And Gaffney has also been a supporter of the very same White Supremacy
leader, Jared Taylor, who has been campaigning for Trump. As the SPLC
notes, Gaffney invited Taylor on his radio show and has heaped praise
upon his work that promotes “anti-Black and anti-Latino racists.”
No, Islam doesn’t hate America. But Trump clearly hates American values.
